Colby Community Library dives into fall with special events

The Colby Community Library (CCL) invites patrons and patrons-to-be to visit the library in September.

What is free and allows a person to borrow hundreds of dollars worth of items annually? Stop in the library during September to sign-up for a card. Children and adults will find new books, magazines, movies, audiobooks, music cds, and more.

Book Clubs

The first evening book club session will be Tuesday, September 19 at 6 p.m. Members will discuss the book “Project Hail Mary” by Andy Weir. Glory Maxam will lead the discussion.

If there is interest in an afternoon club, the first meeting will be Tuesday, September 19 at 2 p.m. The title, “What She Left Behind” by Ellen Wiseman, has been ordered for potential members. Currently, not enough people have signed up for this session.

Book club members do not need to purchase books. The library orders copies for them to pick up each month.

Join crafters and hobbyists on the third Friday of the month for Craft and Hobby night. Bring individual projects to work on in the company others. The first evening will be Friday, September 15. Doors open at 4 p.m.

Adult View or Read the Rainbow folders will be accepted until Friday, December 29. There is still plenty of time to read books or view movies for a chance to win Abby/Colby Chamber certificates.

The “Take and Make” craft kits for children will continue, due to the generosity of the family and friends of Ginny Brown. Memorials in Ginny’s name were donated to the library and will be used to continue the popular program for children and their families. This month, young crafters are invited to be creative while making acorn people, hedgehogs, and leaf butterflies.

Story Times

CCL story times will be on Friday mornings at 10 a.m. Children, along with a parent or guardian, will enjoy stories, songs, poems, activities, and crafts. The first story time will be October 6. A schedule of sessions through December will be available.

1000-4000 Books

The beginning of the school year is a great time to start a child’s reading adventure with the CCL’s 1000 Books Before (the end of) Kindergarten program. Reading binders are available to record books checked out from the CCL. At each 100 books completed level, children choose a prize. When reaching the 1000 book level, a travel reading pillow and book is awarded. Due to parent requests, we have 2000, 3000, and 4000 Books Before the end of Kindergarten binders also available. All these programs promote child literacy and help children hear the recommended 21,000 words each day.

A Railroad History of Colby

It can often be difficult to look back and appreciate just how important the arrival of the railroads were to the people of Central Wisconsin. The arrival of trains drastically changed how and where people lived their lives and even shaped the State of Wisconsin itself in surprising ways. Ben Clark, from the Marathon County Historical Society, presents the story of how the building of the Wisconsin Central Railroad in the 1870s directly led to the creation of Colby and other nearby cities and how train travel continued to shape the lives of the people who lived here for generations to come. The Rural Arts Museum and the Colby Community Library will sponsor this presentation on Thursday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the RCU Community Room at the Colby Community Library.

Hours

The hours at the CCL are M/W/F from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and TU/TH from noon-7 p.m. Beginning September 2, the CCL will be closed on Saturday and Sunday for the fall and winter. Saturday hours will resume for the summer in June-August. The library will be closed on Monday, September 4 for Labor Day.
