The Colby/Abbotsford swim team hosted their first competition of the 2023 season this past Wednesday, inviting members from five other schools to participate in their annual pentathlon. The co-op had several top performers across the five events, showing early signs of success as they continue to prepare for the start of their conference schedule.

The pentathlon functions differently than a typical meet, allowing each swimmer to participate in a 50-yard race for each of the typical competitive strokes as well as a 100-yard IM event in which each athlete swims a different stroke for one length of the pool. Often a good opportunity to see the swimmers take on events that they might not usually swim in, the pentathlon can help shape the team’s lineup before jumping into their dual meets.

Sophomore Madisyn Schraufnagel picked up where she left off last season. After qualifying for the state meet in the 100-yard backstroke in 2022, Schraufnagel will be looking to repeat the feat this year and came away with the best overall finish for the co-op at the pentathlon. Her total time across the five events of 3:07.56 was the second-fastest amongst the sophomore competitors and ninth overall in the competition. She came away with the fastest time amongst sophomore swimmers in the 50-yard backstroke, posting a time of 30.36 seconds, which was four-tenths of a second faster than the next closest competitor. The Colby/Abby sophomore also had the fastest time in the category in the 100-yard IM, posting a 1:05.94, which was seventh best overall, and in the 50-yard breaststroke, where she had a time of 33.73 seconds. Her times in the butterfly and freestyle were also competitive, taking third among sophomores in both, recording times of 29.17 and 28.36 seconds respectively.

Junior Chloe Cihlar had the second fastest overall time for the co-op, putting up a 3:29.19 across all five events, which was sixth fastest among juniors. Cihlar’s best events came in the freestyle and the backstroke, where she took third in her age group, recording times of 27.29 and 32.18 seconds respectively in the two competitions. She also placed fifth in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 32.01 seconds and sixth in the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:15.77.

Sophomores Jordan Jakel and Brezlyn Boyer also put forth top-five performances for the co-op on Wednesday. Jakel took eighth overall in the age category with a total time of 3:30.47. Her best finish came in the 50-yard butterfly, where she finished with a final time of 30.51 seconds. The time netted her fifth place among sophomore swimmers. Her 100-yard IM time of 1:15.34 was seventh best as was her 34.50 seconds in the 50yard backstroke.

Boyer did not qualify for an overall time, but the four events she posted times in would have likely put her well within the top-10 sophomores, with a possibility of pushing into the top-five. Her best finish was in the breaststroke, where she took fourth place with a time of 36.42. She also took sixth-place in both the 50-yard butterfly and the 50-yard freestyle, posting a times of 31.29 and 28.77 seconds respectively.

Other swimmers that posted overall times for the co-op included Olivia Krause, who took 11th place overall among seniors with a time of 3:55.77, Bryleigh Boyer, who placed 11th for freshman with a time of 4:04.26 and Sage Lueth, who placed 15th among freshman with a time of 4:45.63.
