Colby golf opens ‘23 season in Cadott, Bloomer

The Colby golf team’s 2023 season was finally able to get underway last week, opening with a trip to Cadott’s Whispering Pines Golf Course on Thursday. The Hornets placed eighth in the ninehole contest as they worked through some early season learning opportunities.
Tucker Brost came away with Colby’s top score for the evening, shooting a 49 for the Hornets, which placed him 20th overall. The senior settled in over holes four through eight, finding some consistency as the match went on. The performance earned him points for the final conference results.
John Kaiser finished second for the Hornets and 32nd overall, shooting a 59 in his first contest. Kaiser had Colby’s best result on any hole that evening, completing the fourth hole in just three strokes.
Kaden Wiese finished two strokes after Kaiser, finishing the day with a score of 61, tying for 34th place. Immediately following with a score of 62 was teammate Zander Engel, who finished 37th. Carter Hill rounded out the team after trying his hand at a varsity level match for the first time.
The team immediately followed up their match in Cadott with another at Bloomer’s Veterans Memorial Golf Course on Friday. The Hornets took 22nd during the 18-hole competition, shooting a team combined score of 452.
Conditions started out better than the night before, with it being sunny and warm through the front nine, but as the team worked through the back half of the course, the weather took a turn for the worse. Higher speed winds and light precipitation added to the difficulty as the day continued, giving the Hornets an additional challenge to contend with.
Brost once again put forth Colby’s best score, shooting an even 100 over the 18-hole course. He would tie for 82nd place.
The Hornets’ second golfer was once again John Kaiser, who tied for 103rd after shooting a 114. Kaden Wiese took 108th with a score of 118 and Zander Engel finished 110th with a score of 120.
Colby will have a few days off before they hit the course next Monday, May 8. They will be traveling to Medford’s Black River Golf Club where their season was initially supposed to begin on April 20. The makeup match is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
