‘Goodbye 2020, Hello 2021!’ at Colby Library

The Colby Community Library (CCL) is saying “Goodbye 2020 & Hello 2021!” Stop in to see what is beginning in January 2021.
Therewere28lucky“HallmarkHoliday Hoopla” winners. Patrons who checked out Hallmark movies in December received tickets for each movie checked out at the CCL and earned prizes in a random drawing.
Backpacks delivered
The “Bag a Backpack” service project is already brightening the lives of young patients at the Marshfield Medical Center. Ninety backpacks were filled and delivered.
A child life specialist exclaimed as some of the backpacks were being delivered, “This is the best project we never knew we needed!” A total of 41 participating donors and Thrivent Financial made this service project possible.
Winter crafts
Two winter craft kits are available for children during the month of January: create a cotton ball snowman face or craft a couple of beaded snowflakes. Limit: one craft bag per person per visit, please.
Games and Fun in ‘21
The CCL theme this year will be “Games and Fun in ’21.” While no one knows what the year will bring, a game will be featured each month to bring some fun into 2021. Books and movies will be on display to support the game themes. In January, Uno will be highlighted. When gatherings are once again allowed at the library, the staff is hoping to host game nights, too.
Bingo cards available
The annual CCL Reading and Movie Challenge, 2021-style, features bingo cards. Pick up book and/or movie bingo cards at the library. Read or view items to fill in nine squares for a bingo. Items must be checked out at the Colby Community Library for the challenges.
Patrons may turn in as many cards as they are able to finish throughout the year. All cards need to be turned in by Dec. 31 at noon to be eligible for Abby/ Colby Crossings Chamber certificates and other game-themed prizes in a drawing from the completed bingo cards.
New this year: Teens are also invited to play bingo throughout the year, both for movies and books, to earn chances to win gift cards.
New CCL lists are available. Wondering what new books were added to the CCL collection in 2020? Pick up that list. Want to view movies released in 2020? The library staff has a list of those. Each year, director Vicky Calmes compiles a list of favorite books. Her “Best Reads 20+20” list is available, as are copies of her past reads dating back to 2009. While book clubs are not currently meeting, a packet of all books read from 2006-2020, with member ratings, is printed.
Continuing programs
1. Parents of new babies (newbornsix months) are eligible to pick up a free “New Baby Bag” filled with information and handmade baby items.
2. Home-school teachers are encouraged to submit curriculum requests for library staff to fill.
3. Daycare or preschool providers may request monthly “Babysitter Book Bins” filled with age appropriate books, movies, and lesson plans. Each month focuses on a different theme.
4. For families with children from birth to age six, the “Books B4 Kindergarten” programs offered by the CCL are a great way to form favorable reading habits at a young age. The children enjoy the prizes they earn while their vocabulary is getting a boost to prepare them for independent reading.
