Abby/Colby matmen take part in Husky Invite

The Abbotsford/Colby wrestling co-op travelled west the for Eau Claire North Husky Invite on Saturday, Dec. 14.

The co-op competed against roughly 30 teams, and against numerous stateranked grapplers eager for glory.

With Carter Grewe still out, the Abby/ Colby co-op finished a respectable 11th place out of 27 scoring teams with a team score of 183 points.

Ellsworth took the event with a total of 407 points, Saint Croix Falls followed with 365 and Medford was third with 347 points.

The grapplers were led once more by River Halopka. Halopka backed up last week’s 126 title in Auburndale with a fourth place finish in Eau Claire in the 126 weight class. Halopka went 2-2, earning one win by pinfall and one by major decision as he earned 35 points.

Five wrestlers placed inside the top ten in their respective weight classes.

Jose Rodriguez was seventh, and went 2-2 in the 120 weight class, taking one victory by pinfall and taking 29 points for the co-op. Hunter Mess was also seventh, going 2-2 in the 132 weight class. Mess won both decisions by decision, earning 25 points.

Sophomore Mason Wellman made his first appearance on the mats this year after injury forced him to miss the first tournament of the year. Wellman was also making first appearance at the 152 weight class, after moving up from his weight of 138 last year..

Wellman took home two wins by pins, but dropped two matches, both to state ranked wrestlers as he earned 27 points and finished in seventh in the 152 pound division.

Brandon Vicente built off his title winning performance in Aburndale by taking seventh in the 170 weight class in Eau Claire. Vicente went 2-2, with one victory by pinfall and another by major decision to earn 28 team points.

Levi Dommer was tenth in the 195 weight class. Dommer also went 2-2, with one victory coming by way of pinfall. For his efforts Dommer added 17 points to Abby/Colby’s team total.

Andrew Jeske was 12th on Saturday in the 182 pound division. Jeske earned a pair of wins, one by decision and one by pinfall. Jeske finished with eight points.

Two wreslters - Xavier Digman and Devin Thums - each placed 14th. Digman competed in the 160 weight class, earned six points and went 1-3, with one victory by way of pinfall.

Thums also took six points, earning six points in the 220 weight class, with his lone victory coming through pinfall.

Grady Steinman and Lucas Baumann each placed 16th at the Husky Invite. Steinman competed in the 106 weight class, but did not win a match, earning one point.

Baumann was active in the 113 weight class and was winless, but earned one point. Angel Maganda wrestled at 145, but did not place or score points.
