The project is located adjacent to Syrup Creek (WBIC 1756800) in SW 1/4, SW 1/4, Section 33, Township 30 North, Range 2 West in the Town of Maplehurst, Taylor County, WI. The project consists of an existing gravel pit currently owned and operated by Cole Szpara (Slobodnik Gravel & Excavating). The proposed pond as a result of mining is located within 500’ of Syrup Creek. The existing footprint is approximately 9 acres with approximately 5 acres being actively mined. No lateral expansion to the footprint of the existing mining operation is proposed, but it is proposed to be deepened (approximately 21’ deep total). Once mining is completed the pond will be fully reclaimed to Wisconsin State reclamation standards. The site is located within the floodplain and future public access will be granted from Syrup Creek to the resulting pond once mining is completed for public recreation and fishing. The Department will review the proposal provided by the applicant and any information from public comments and the public informational hearing. The Department will determine whether the proposal complies with ss. 1.11, 30.19 , 30.208, 281.36, Wis. Stats., and ch. NR 150, Wis. Adm. Code, and ensure that the required mitigation meets the standards in s. 281.36(3r), Stats. if the project impacts wetlands.
