On June 24 Lt. Governor Sara Rodriguez travelled to Medford to meet with Christy and Joe Tomandl at their farms to discuss the future of dairies in Wisconsin. The Tomandls are heavily involved in the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship (DGA), a nonprofit organization that partners with established grazing dairy farmers, universities, community based organizations and other entities to remove barriers that keep new farmers from entering the profession. According to DGA, the United States loses 5-10% of its dairy farms every year. The DGA combines work-based training with related instruction for the occupation of “dairy grazier,” or a farmer who uses managed grazing to plant perennial forages and then rotates cows through these pastures of high-quality grasses which are then allowed to rest and regrow. “Just training the next generation isn’t enough,” said Joe Tomandl. This area youngster got the opportunity to check out the cockpit of a Cherokee Arrow airplane at the hamburger fly-in held at the Taylor County Airport on June 18. Missy Hughes, secretary of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), left, was in Gilman, May 29, speaking with Vault Village owner Lynn Rosemeyer, about the patio space at the business, that was improved through a WEDC Vibrant Spaces Grant. Vault Village and Amanda’s Place also received FIX-IT Grants through the WEDC, while a $250,000 IDLE Site Grant went to the old nursing home, which has since been turned into Hickory Haven Apartments. “We’re excited that you all have started this, and we’ve provided the resources to help support these small wins and efforts you’re making,” said Hughes.
