A small city of ice shelters ranging from high-end Ice Castles to homemade plywood and tarp shacks sprung up on Miller Dam (Chequamegon Waters Flowage) just in time for the annual Miler Dam Lake Association Ice Fishing Contest held Saturday, January 25. While air temperatures were mild, especially compared to earlier last week, fishing efforts were hampered by strong winds which at times sent unsecured shelters flying. Beyond the fishing action, participants gathered to socialize and enjoy the company of friends and others in the fishing community. In the shelter, people could register their catches for the contest and volunteers sold food and beverages as well as numerous raffle tickets. The money raised by Miller Dam Lake Association goes to pay for improvements to the flowage, safety equipment and park and shelter upgrades. Volunteers with the Miller Dam Lake Association were kept busy selling raffle and door prize tickets for prizes donated by many area sponsors. Adult winners in the fishing competition were: Perch — First place Anthony Fazzori 6 oz., 10 in. registered at 10:53 a.m. and second Cory Niggeman 4 oz, 9 in. registered at 1:48 p.m. Bluegill — First place Ethan Schultz 10 oz., 9.5 in. registered at 9:48 a.m., Second place McKinze Webster 10 oz., 9.25 in. registered at 11:12 a.m. Crappie — First place Jerry Lingen 1 lb., 6 oz, 13.25 in. registered at 9:43 a.m., second place Jim Poyda 1 lb., 5 oz., 15.25 in. registered at 1:54 p.m. Bass — First place Virgil Wysocki 5 lbs. 5 oz, 21 in. registered at 1:44 p.m., second place Hayden Rakobec, 4 lbs. 3 oz., 19.5 in. registered at 1:17 p.m. Northern — First place Beau Pockat 12 lbs, 6 oz, 35.75 in. registered at 10:16 a.m., second place, Lucas Stahake 9 lbs, 14 oz., 34.25 inches registered at 2:30 p.m. Beau Pockat, 16, of Gilman, registers his northern on Saturday morning. Coming in at 12 lbs, 6 oz, 35.75 in., it took first place in the adult division. Fishing is only part of the fun for this group from the Greenwood area who had a warm campfire going on the ice to thaw out from the cold. Youth winners in the fishing competition were: Perch — First place Conner Rick 8 oz., 10.25 in. registered at 2:39 p.m. and second place Leillian Baker 5 oz, 9.5 in. registered at 11:32 a.m. Bluegill — First place Behr Kowalczyk, 8 oz., 8.5 in. registered at 10:45 a.m., Second place Hayda Penk 8 oz., 8.75 inch registered at 11:51 a.m. Crappie — First place Grant Pattsa 1 lb., 3 oz, 12.5 in. registered at 2:45 p.m., second place Matthew Kuklianski 12 oz., 13 in. registered at 9:09 a.m. Bass — First place Tanner Miller 5 lbs. 6 oz, 21 in. registered at 11:03 a.m., second place Isaac Brisky, 3 lbs. 7 oz., 18.5 in. registered at 12:02 p.m. Northern — First place Gunnner Lemke 15 lbs, 9 oz, 38.5 in. registered at 2:45 p.m., second place, Kyle Joiner 12 lbs, 10 oz., 35.5 in. registered at 9:52 a.m. Jeremy Rohland of Withee drills some fresh ice fishing holes Saturday morning with hopes of catching a prize fish to enter into the contest. Strong winds across the Miller Dam Flowage caused this unsecured fishing shelter to go flying across the ice before it was captured and secured by a nearby angler.
