A small city of ice shelters ranging from high-end Ice Castles to homemade plywood and tarp shacks sprung up on Miller Dam (Chequamegon Waters Flowage) just in time for the annual Miler Dam Lake Association Ice Fishing Contest held Saturday, January 25. While air temperatures were mild, especially compared to earlier last week, fishing efforts were hampered by strong winds which at times sent unsecured shelters flying. Beyond the fishing action, participants gathered to socialize and enjoy the company of friends and others in the fishing community. In the shelter, people could register their catches for the contest and volunteers sold food and beverages as well as numerous raffle tickets. The money raised by Miller Dam Lake Association goes to pay for improvements to the flowage, safety equipment and park and shelter upgrades. Volunteers with the Miller Dam Lake Association were kept busy selling raffle and door prize tickets for prizes donated by many area sponsors.
