C ounty Taylor CONGRATULATIONS Jessica Haenel What do you teach? Educator Currently, I teach high school students in the Rural Virtual Academy. This year my classes include Personal Fitness, Health, Life Skills, and First Aid & Safety. I also oversee a variety of independent courses. of the Month How long have you been an educator? I was hired at the Medford Area School District in 2001 and had the privilege over the years to work in every school in the Medford District. In 2010, I was asked to pilot a middle school physical education course for the Rural Virtual Academy. As the RVA continued to grow I had an opportunity to work full time in the RVA starting the 2017-18 school year. Who was your favorite/best teacher when you were a student and why? An impactful teacher I had as a student was a middle school physical education teacher. She was my neighbor in town and I felt as though I had an extra special connection with her outside of the school walls. Why did you choose this profession? The teaching profession was a way for me to be in a work environment that can make a positive impact on others. At the time, I didn’t realize the positive impact, growth and learning I would get in return from students. What inspires you to continue as an educator? There are many aspirations to being an educator. Witnessing and being a part of students overcoming challenges and achieving their goals, and seeing them thrive and succeed. A supportive school environment and relationships with colleagues that work together for common goals. There are intrinsic rewards to helping others, being part of a team and collectively working to make a difference. What is your favorite memory as an educator? Some memorable moments teaching have been the rope hop at the elementary level, track and field day for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, going on bike rides with high school students and getting to know students and their families. Young people are fun, kind and generous and I am thankful for the impact they have made in my life. Sponsored in partnership with: 57108_7
