C ounty Taylor CONGRATULATIONS Jessica Haenel What do you teach? Educator Currently, I teach high school students in the Rural Virtual Academy. This year my classes include Personal Fitness, Health, Life Skills, and First Aid & Safety. I also oversee a variety of independent courses. of the Month How long have you been an educator? I was hired at the Medford Area School District in 2001 and had the privilege over the years to work in every school in the Medford District. In 2010, I was asked to pilot a middle school physical education course for the Rural Virtual Academy. As the RVA continued to grow I had an opportunity to work full time in the RVA starting the 2017-18 school year. Who was your favorite/best teacher when you were a student and why? An impactful teacher I had as a student was a middle school physical education teacher. She was my neighbor in town and I felt as though I had an extra special connection with her outside of the school walls. Why did you choose this profession? The teaching profession was a way for me to be in a work environment that can make a positive impact on others. At the time, I didn’t realize the positive impact, growth and learning I would get in return from students. What inspires you to continue as an educator? There are many aspirations to being an educator. Witnessing and being a part of students overcoming challenges and achieving their goals, and seeing them thrive and succeed. A supportive school environment and relationships with colleagues that work together for common goals. There are intrinsic rewards to helping others, being part of a team and collectively working to make a difference. What is your favorite memory as an educator? Some memorable moments teaching have been the rope hop at the elementary level, track and field day for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, going on bike rides with high school students and getting to know students and their families. Young people are fun, kind and generous and I am thankful for the impact they have made in my life. The Medford Area Middle School Band would like to share a big thank you to all of our business/foundation donors as well as individuals who have supported the program via their Mattress or Kwik Trip Card Fundraiser. Individuals and organizations who have donated to the MAMS band program are: Medford Education Association, The Classes of 67-72, Patrick Marsh Foundation, Weather Shield LITE Foundation, Forward Bank, Nathan Bilodeau, AnnMarie Grant, and Purple Mattress. “If you see people from these organizations, please thank them! We have been able to raise about $8,500 through donations/grants and $7,000 through fundraisers. The generous support of our community has allowed us to purchase: 2 piccolos, 4 clarinets, 4 alto saxophones, 1 tenor saxophone, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, and a bass drum stand,” said middle school band teacher Kendra Junk. “These instruments are going directly into the hands of the students. The best part of being able to provide new instruments is how excited students get when they receive a new and working instrument,” she said. They consistently have instruments that need to be repaired and are often coming back from repair with a higher repair cost than the value of the instrument. They have several instruments in student hands right now that are functioning enough to work but are not in great shape. If you would like to donate to the MAMS band program, would like to read more about the condition of our instruments, or to see the complete list of donors please visit: https://bit.ly/SupportMAMSBand. “As always thank you for your support of the MAMS Band Program,” Junk said.
