| Every society needs a group that is trained and F equipped to answer the call to service when there is a ' great need. i These citizen soldiers have gone by many names and served many roles across as many countries from the hoplites of ancient Greece to the Home Guard that was the last line of defense in World War II England. In the United States, this role has been served by the National Guard which traces its history back to December 13,1636 when the first militia regiments in North Ameri ica were organized in Massachusetts under an order of I the Massachusetts Bay Colony’s General Court. I In 1879, the Wisconsin National Guard was formally I created from the existing state militia and its precursor I territorial militia. The modern history of the division I originated in the spring of 1861 with the 1st Battalion, BRUNNÍR I 128th Infantry and the 2nd Regiment, 1st Wisconsin 1 Cavalry. They were made up of independent companies recruited from throughout Wisconsin and were orga- 1 nized and activated into Federal service. Wisconsin National Guard soldiers have been called ft up several times throughout the history of the orga ■* nization. Guardsmen from Wisconsin served in the Spanish American War of 1899, both World Wars, « the Berlin Crisis and the War on Terror. There are currently about 9,600 members in the Wisconsin National Guard. They reside in ■r all of the state’s 72 counties, ranging from fewer ft than ten in several lightly populated counties in A the northeastern part of the state to about 1,100 U, each in Dane and Milwaukee counties. Over 600 V live in other states, with 70 percent of those re W siding in Illinois and Minnesota. The approximately 7,400 Army Guard soldiers train in armories located in 67 communities throughout : the state. Most of the units are assigned to one of three major commands: the 32nd Infantry Brigade, headquartered at Camp Douglas; the 64th Troop Command, headquartered at Madison; f and the 157th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, * headquartered at Milwaukee. In addition, the 426th Regiment (Regional Training Institute) is also active, heir to the traditions of the 426th Infantry Regiment.
