Taylor County Educator of the Month ROSS HACKBARTH What do you teach and for how long? I teach 11th and 12 grade social studies courses at Medford Area Senior High. Courses I teach are Advanced Placement (A.P.) Psychology, Advanced Placement (A.P.) United States History, Introduction to Psychology, and Abnormal Psychology. I will be completing my 20th year in education, all at Medford Area Senior High School. Who was your favorite/best teacher when you were a student and why? I was fortunate enough to have both of my parents as high school teachers in my hometown and I believe they were my favorite and best teachers. My Mother taught Spanish and my Father taught Mathematics and Science courses. They were engaging, effective, fair, and held me to a high standard. What they taught far surpassed the academic experience. Why did you choose this profession? I’m not entirely sure if I chose the profession or if it chose me. I cannot really say that there was ever really another profession that I strongly considered. The ability to build meaningful relationships, engage in the academic experience, and foster the development of others as a part of a profession — I cannot think of anything more right for me personally. What inspires you as an educator? Without a doubt, the students that I engage with each day. I am beyond fortunate to have the opportunity to teach the students in the courses that I do. I hope to have a positive impact on the students at MASH and play a small role in their many future accomplishments. Each class period, day, week, month, and year are similar yet different allowing me continually grow professionally and personally. Further, I have the distinct opportunity to work with some outstanding educators and better people at MASH and within the Social Studies department. I hope to carry on the tradition of academic excellence at MASH. What is your favorite memory as an educator? Sponsored in partnership with: I have many fond memories as an educator. Rather than one specific memory, I truly enjoy hearing about the many accomplishments and achievements of past and present students. Whether large accomplishments and achievements or small-talk of life’s endeavors, I enjoy connecting with students that I have encountered and hearing about what great things they are doing. 39636_21
