116487_3 J.A. O’Leary Scholarship J.A. O’Leary is the former owner and publisher of The Star News. He was a leader in community newspapers and a technology innovator. J.A. O’Leary was a leader in bringing the American newspaper industry into the computer age. He had a vision of the future of technology in newspapers and worked tirelessly throughout his career sharing his knowledge. He died in 1997 and the staff and family have sponsored a scholarship in his memory since. $ 500 Scholarship is open to a current year graduate who resides in Taylor County and is pursuing a career in journalism, communication, graphic design or computer technology. To apply, submit a one page (approx. 500 word) essay about what your community newspaper means to you along with applicant’s name, mailing address, phone number, email address, high school or GED program and high school GPA. Include applicant’s planned major field of study and the school or program they will be attending. Deadline: Friday, Apr. 12 before 3 p.m. Recipient will be notified by May 15. Applications May Be... The top 30 essays were selected from among all 8th graders at Medford Area Middle School. Student essays placing 16 to 30 received a $20 Chamber Gift Certificate and recognition certificate along with a laminated copy of their essay. Honorees were (in alphabetical order): Sada Carstensen, Kinnley Gowey, Autumn Hartl, Braxton Larson, Graecyn Meseberg, Coraline Neitzel, Oliver Nuernberger, Steven Parkinson, Natalie Pomeroy, Melanie Richter, Renae Rymer, Avery Sigmund, Emma Steinke, Gracie Strama and Maggie Wallace-Szydel. Jacob and Daniel Nagel were joined by members of The Chamber, the Gilman Development Foundation and representatives from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation to celebrate the ribbon cutting for Hickory Haven Apartments in Gilman. The owners renovated and converted the former nursing home facility into a mixedsize apartment complex with seven different styles of apartments ranging from a 600 square foot studio apartment to a 1,400 unit with three bedrooms and two baths.
