Overthinking can lead to analysis paralysis. In golf, analysis paralysis can lead to freezing up and a case of the “yips-” With estate planning, you can spend so much time agonizing about the initial step that it interferes with the process. The process starts with gathering your essentials. Before “teeing off,” know what you own-bank, investment, and retirement accounts, real estate, and vehicles; what you owe-mortgages, loans, and other debts; and your beneficiaries- who you want to receive your money and property, family, friends, and charities. This inventory is your “yardage book,” so to speak. It gives you the lay of the land. Without it, your estate plan has no direction. With it, you are ready to take a confident first swing. Next week I’ll discuss selecting the right club.
