RECORD REVIEW 50 YEARS AGO... WEDNESDAY, JULY 16, 1975 Rural churches to sponsor refugees Lutheran Immigration Service is working with Rev. James Reiff to place Vietnamese refugees in our area. Dr. Nguyen Nhu Chuong will begin assisting Dr. H. A. Schulz in the Edgar medical office in the near future. He and his family, including four children, are expected to arrive in the area the end of July. Officer hired at Marathon The Marathon village board has hired George Ellis as part-time police officer. He succeeds Dean Albrecht who has accepted a full-time position with the FBI. Fair barn project nearly completed The project undertaken by the Athens Advancement and Agricultural Association is the form of a 50’ by 96’ pole building in the village park. The fill is in the barn and soon other projects that are a part of the total barn project will be moving toward completion including 38 more horse stalls in the old barn, water piping work into both barns and electrical work in the new barn. 25 YEARS AGO... WEDNESDAY, JULY 19, 2000 Reading scores best state average Third graders at Athens, Edgar and Marathon scored above state average in reading comprehension test results released this week by the Wisconsin Dept. of Public Instruction. The statewide reading test was administered to 58,985 public school third graders in March. Results were from 63 multiple choice and two short-answer questions based on three reading passages. Donated flag pole Members of Edgar VFW Post 1087 helped build a flag pole in Fenwood in conjunction with the Fenwood Lions Club. Materials for the flag pole base were donated by County Concrete Corp., Marathon. The flag pole is located next to the Fenwood ball diamond. They are increasingly in evidence along travel routes throughout the Badger State, says Raymond H. Ott, the Marathon county highway safety coordinator. New Committees Named At the recent Legion Auxiliary meeting, past president Anita Deininger installed Mrs. Marilyn Braunl as treasurer and Mrs. Lou Anne Seliger as vice president. President Theresa Szymanski announced the Membership committee would be headed by Mrs. Isabelle Ruplinger and Annette Southworth. WEDNESDAY, JULY 19, 2000 Stratford area farmers assist UW-Madison in dairy research Stratford area dairy farmers Ralph Bredl, Alan Krause and Gary Ruegsegger are part of a group of dairy farmers and representatives from Wisconsin’s dairy industry that is advising the UW-Madison on its efforts to renovate and enlarge dairy research facilities. Stratford VFW Ladies Auxiliary hold annual meeting The Ladies Auxiliary to Stratford Memorial Post 6352 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars met at the Clubhouse. President Rita Wiesman presided.
