Students learn of Mexican holiday, art Students in high school Spanish classes were able to learn about the Mexican holiday of Día de los Muertos. This translates to “Day of the Dead” but is not like Halloween in the U.S. Instead, it is a celebration and remembrance of the lives of deceased loved ones. Along with the holiday, students learned about alebrijes, a staple of Mexican folk art. Alebrijes are fantastical animals combining the parts of different animals to represent fire, earth, wind and the sea. Some see these animals as “spirit guides,” while most just enjoy their bright colors and beautiful geometric patterns.
