THE ROCKET for Winter 2024 SIXTH GRADE CHALLENGED WITH 3D PRINTING PROJECT What a fun group of kiddos! In math we have been busy learning about and applying our knowledge of ratios, rates, fractions and geometry. Students were also introduced to 3D printing during our geometry unit. They had the choice of creating a name plate rectangular prism, square pyramid or cube dice. It was an extremely challenging project for many students, but watching them grow with a problem-solving mindset and seeing their creativity unfold was so much fun! Once they chose their base project and found the surface area of the object, they were allowed to be as creative as they wanted! Throughout the year, we will continue practicing design development and how to push through when our design doesn’t work the way we want it to. In science, students recently completed a chemical reaction process during the unit on metabolism. This chemical reaction was a model for what happens inside the cells in our body when energy is released. Students observed heat transfer, color change and a gas as a product of the reaction. In English and language arts, students are studying why and when people stand up for others and themselves by reading selections from books such as “A Wrinkle in Time,” “Children of the Dust Bowl” and “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.” Students examine the motivations and actions taken by fictional characters and real people to stand up for injustices they have experienced or witnessed. In social studies, students are learning about Earth’s physical geography. Lessons include how the Earth is part of our solar system and how it is constantly changing and moving. We are also studying Earth’s land and ocean features. In addition, students are learning about current events and top stories that impact the United States and our world. ~Mrs. Wilke, Ms. Reif and Mrs. Weisenberger, sixth grade teachers EXPERIENCE LEARNING IN SPENCER ART STUDENTS TRY THEIR HAND AT GLASS WORK, TEXTILES, DRAWING Art students are off to a great start this year with a variety of projects. Kindergarteners are working on ships in a bottle mixed media drawings and birds in the style of Australian artist Pete Cromer. First graders just finished sculpting their clay pumpkins and started their self portraits. Second graders just finished abstract drawings based on the work of Mike Perry, while third graders are studying Wisconsin artist Georgia O’Keeffe and her flower paintings. Fourth graders recently finished Wisconsin travel posters, built their clay cupcakes following the work of Wayne Thiebaud, and will be starting the much anticipated neon weaving project. Fifth grade is in the middle of letter sculptures. The current middle school survey group includes the last round of sixth and seventh graders who are starting their one-point perspective colored pencil drawings. Eighth graders will begin their art survey next week. Yearbook students are wrapping up a variety of pages while maintaining the theme of “Take Part.” Introduction to art is working on their sketchbooks and final choice project, and the digital photography class (NTC dual credit course) is wrapping up their final as well – a collection of photo prompts demonstrating a wide range of subject matter and environments. Advanced placement 3D art students are working hard on creating college-level works for their portfolio. It has been a busy semester with so many amazing artworks being produced!
