THE ROCKET for Winter 2024 From the Elementary Principal From the Middle/ High School Principal by Eddie Ikert by Jason Gorst Happy New Year, everyone. We hope you all had a safe and happy holiday break. We have had a great first half of the school year and are excited for what the second half will bring. After some frustrations and delays, we were able to open the new playground, which has been very exciting for our students. We also completed our first student-led parent-teacher conferences, giving students a chance to take ownership and report on their own learning. Our first trimester ended Dec. 8. Congratulations to Haley Kunze, Ophelia Heintz, Mckenzie Koenig, Genesis Lopez, Jasper Berres, Andon Doro and Stella Kollmansberger for being selected as the first trimester Captains of Character. Our holiday concert was completed on Dec. 7 and once again showcased the extraordinary talent of our students and Mrs. Seefeldt. Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out to support our students. Also, congratulations to Jameson Lucht (shown below), who won a Christmas card contest through Marathon County; and Kinley Schulz, who was awarded $250 to donate to the school by getting second place in the Schierl Tire Coloring Contest. She decided to donate $125 to local families in need and $125 to the fourth grade Madison field trip. As the second half of the year gets underway, we are looking forward to getting back into routines and some very engaging learning experiences. It is hard to believe, but we also start summer school plans and registering our newest Rockets for 4K next year. I hope everyone has a great start to 2024! Looking ahead to the upcoming school year, even though it may seem distant, we are thrilled to announce the completion of our course registrations for the next academic year. We take pride in maintaining a small school environment while offering a diverse range of courses to cater to the unique interests and needs of our students. Recognizing that students are still exploring their future career paths, our commitment is to guide them in selecting courses that will positively shape their journey beyond high school. We understand the individuality of each student and, therefore, refrain from adopting a one-size-fits-all approach to our course offerings. Here is an update on some of the exciting and distinct opportunities available at Spencer. Our career and technical education (CTE) department encompasses business, agriculture, family and consumer science, and technical education courses. Business education exposes students to marketing, personal finance, web design, coding, accounting and entrepreneurship. Agriculture courses allow students to delve into plant, animal or food science. The family and consumer science department features a popular culinary arts program, along with sewing, interior design and parent-child classes. Our tech. ed. program offers pathways in woods and metals, including opportunities in construction, engineering, small engines and computer automated design (CAD). New this year was the addition of the construction geometry course, in which seniors will apply math skills in our shop, earning both tech. ed. and math credits through collaboration between our tech. ed. and math instructors. Diversity extends to our core subject classes, catering to various student interests and abilities. In biology, chemistry and physics, students can progress to environmental science, astronomy, or body structure and function. English enthusiasts can opt for advanced-placement (AP) English or engage in written communication for technical college credit. Our social studies department provides elective choices like America at War, psychology, sociology, sports psychology and AP psychology. Math students can choose advanced math, AP calculus or practical courses such as consumer math and statistics, applicable to everyday life. The arts hold a special place at Spencer, with handbells, concert band and concert choir programs. Elective opportunities like Cabaret, Madrigal, jazz band, and solo and ensemble further enrich our offerings. The art program covers drawing, ceramics, digital art, sculpture, yearbook and painting. Our new physical education facility expands course options, including tactical games (team sports), strength and performance courses for athletic development, and lifetime fitness for general fitness principles. Addressing the teaching shortage, we are introducing a Foundations of Education course for upperclassmen interested in becoming teachers. This course pairs with a new student organization, Educators Rising. If anyone aspires to become an educator, please reach out for guidance. We are enthusiastic about our future course offerings and the opportunities they hold for our students at Spencer. EXPERIENCE LEARNING IN SPENCER KINDERGARTEN CLASSES LEARN FROM TV METEOROLOGIST We have had a wonderful first half of the school year! The kindergarten classes are learning all about different types of weather and the components that make the weather. We had the privilege of having Justin Lowe from WAOW as a guest at Spencer, to explain his job as a meteorologist and help us understand the weather on a deeper level. We enjoyed his visit and learned so much from him. In December, we were busy preparing for our Christmas concert. The kindergarteners did an amazing job singing their songs and performing in front of many people. The kindergarten classes also enjoyed a trip on the “Polar Express” right before Christmas break and had a fun day together before we celebrated with our families at home. We look forward to the second half of the school year and wish all of you a happy New Year! ~Mrs. Bezlyk, Mrs. Tomke and Mrs. Wolf, kindergarten teachers PAID ADVERTISEMENT
