Page 10 ELEMENTARY MUSIC STUDENTS DELIGHT PARENTS, COMMUNITY WITH HOLIDAY CONCERT SAVE THE DATE FOR SPRING CONCERT MAY 16 Happy New Year! I hope you had a good 2023 and look forward to all the things to come in 2024. As a district, I am extremely excited about all the progress we made as a district in working toward our goal of providing a well-rounded academic experience for our students along with providing support for our families. I want to thank all of you for your support of our school and, most importantly, our students. We are very lucky to have such a strong support system for our kids through parents and the community. I am very appreciative of the work Spencer Youth Recreations (SYR) has done to provide what will be a state-of-the-art playground area that will provide hours of fun along with presenting the community and School District of Spencer as a great place to raise a child. The representation of the SYR group consisting of Spencer School District graduates and other young parents gives me an optimistic view of the future of the School District of Spencer. It is important to have young parents lead the way for the future of our district. I look forward to the completion of the Launch Pad Infant Care Center in March with an opening date of April 1. This service to our district is a well-documented need and will offer relief to our staff and area parents with daycare needs. Please also keep in mind that if you have a New Year’s resolution to exercise more, you can utilize our fitness center or use our hallways to walk before and after school. If you are interested, please stop in at the middle/high school office for registration information along with key fob access, which involves a cost of $10. I am extremely excited and proud to announce that the Board of Education has approved Mr. Jason Gorst (current high school principal) as the next district administrator of the School District of Spencer beginning July 1. I am very comfortable in knowing that the district will be in great hands when I retire at the end of the year. I am looking forward to the year ahead. I feel our students, district and community have a bright future and it is great to be part of it. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns at 715-659-5347. Once again, Happy New Year! EXPERIENCE LEARNING IN SPENCER Greetings from the elementary music classroom! These past few months, students have been working hard on a variety of different skills, including singing folk songs and solos for our Wall of Fame, dancing to different kinds of music, playing numerous instruments including our new tin whistles, learning different music vocabulary words and reading musical notation. However, our biggest event this past semester was the Holiday Concert on Dec. 7. Students in 4-year-old kindergarten through fifth grade participated, and were able to share with parents and community members all that they’ve learned these past months. The theme of the concert was “We All Celebrate,” and each grade sang a combination of classic Christmas songs, Hanukkah songs and some wintery songs to celebrate the holiday season. With the songs, students also got to do sign language, show creative movement using colorful scarves and play instruments such as xylophones, handbells, bucket drums and recorders. It was a wonderful event, and the students should be very proud of their performance – they did a fantastic job! Looking ahead to this spring, I wanted to share some important information with you. This year’s Spring Concert for the elementary students is Thursday, May 16, at 1:30 p.m. in the LuCille Tack Center for the Arts. There is no evening performance – only one show in the afternoon. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Otherwise, I look forward to celebrating the warmer weather with our concert, and hope to see you there! ~Amanda Seefeldt, elementary music teacher FIRST-GRADERS LEARN ABOUT ASTRONOMY, COUNT DAYS OF SCHOOL The first graders came back from Christmas break and are rip-roaring ready to learn! In science, we are studying the sun, moon and stars. Through hands-on experiences, we are learning that the earth rotates and the sun is still; that is why we have day and night. We are extending this learning into language and will be writing about the sun and moon, with a focus on the use of adjectives and prepositions. Students are especially excited to extend their learning at the end of the month when we will take a field trip to the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point Planetarium! Students continue to grow in all areas of reading, as they learn new phonics patterns and tackle multi-syllable words. In math, we are solving addition and subtraction equations using a combination of strategies, including a life-sized number line! We have been counting the days of school and are at 85 at the time of article submission! Instead of celebrating 100 days of school this year, we are celebrating 120 days, as that is our first grade benchmark! ~Suzanne Boyd, Brooke Hinker and Janelle Rucker, first grade teachers PAIDADVERTISEMENT THE ROCKET for Winter 2024 From the desk of Mr. E Table of Contents District administrator’s letter, music news, first grade news . . . . . . . . . . .
