Mystery Readers keep storytime exciting Granton Elementary School has started a Mystery Reader program for grades 4K-2. Every week, a mystery reader comes into our classrooms to read a book. The students are given three clues throughout the week to try to figure out who the mystery reader will be. Our mystery reader schedule is full until April, but we are looking for readers for the spring. If you are interested, please contact Kim Aumann. Christmas notes Caroling – The high school students will be Christmas caroling TWO days this year! Dec. 19 and 20. If you have a business or nursing home that would possibly like to be a part of our rotation, contact choir teacher Autumn Lloyd at Granton schools! Christmas Store – The annual Christmas Store will be held the week of Dec. 4-8. Ms. Woller is always looking for “elves” to help students shop and to wrap presents! Shopping takes place during the school day, as does the wrapping. Please contact Ms. Woller at wollera@granton.k12.wi.us if you are interested in helping! Second graders enjoy Thanksgivingthemed STEM activity To celebrate the upcoming holiday of Thanksgiving, second graders were given a challenge. Tom the Turkey had been escaping from the farm so he did not become dinner. Second graders were tasked with building a structure using marshmallows and toothpicks to keep him from escaping. This STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) project was a lot of fun and the students enjoyed planning and building their structures. No turkeys escaped on our watch in the second grade! Fourth and fifth graders take cranberry tour The fourth and fifth graders have started the year off by learning about our great state of Wisconsin. In October, we were fortunate enough to go on a field trip to the Wisconsin Cranberry Discovery Center and Wisconsin Cranberry Research Center. Here the fourth and fifth graders were able to learn about the history of cranberry production and see how cranberries are harvested and processed. They even got to pick some fresh cranberries right from the cranberry bed. We also had a taste test of three different flavors of dried cranberries: original, watermelon and raspberry lemonade. We also got to try fresh cranberries. Did you know that Wisconsin is one of only a few states in the United States that produces cranberries, and we hold the number-one spot? The juice, dried cranberries and cranberry sauce that you buy at the store could be grown and processed right here in Wisconsin; how cool is that?! We can’t wait to continue learning what else makes Wisconsin so great! Pumpkin carving a big hit Learning about energy through the ups and downs The third graders made roller coasters to demonstrate energy and how it changes. The kindergarten and middle school students participated in the annual carving of pumpkins in mid-October. This has been a yearly tradition for approximately 23 years. It is always fun for the middle school students to look back on their kindergarten pictures of them carving pumpkins “all those years ago.” Thank you, middle school students and staff, for helping the kindergarteners out with this fun project!
