thens VFW Auxiliary 8527 meeting minutes

President Ruth Weiler called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. at the Athens Fire and Ambulance meeting room, with Cheryl Engel serving a delicious party dessert. The opening prayer was read and the Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. General orders were read. Committee reports were given.

Loyalty Day is April 29 at Merrill. March 29 was Vietnam Veterans Day. A message was put on the message sign on the exhibition building to thank and appreciate Vietnam veterans.

President pins have been ordered. They will be $3 each.

Denise Sekorski reported on her visit with the Vietnam vets at the Athens Cafe. She had made treats for them. They meet every second Tuesday of the month at the cafe.

Local and district meetings and elections will be in Oxford on May 7. The state meeting will be June 7-10 in Rothschild.

Scholarship recipients were decided on by Chairman Gloria Lavicka and several auxiliary members.

Cheryl Engel reported that the group is booked for July 21 for “Dinner on the Square.”

The next meeting will be April 25, 6:30 p.m., with elections of officers taking place then.

Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on April 6 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Two games of Sheepshead were played. Butch Boris won the first game and Wil Srack took second place. Steve Klockziem won the second game and David Perrodin took second. Pat Frank received low score. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Athens Fire Hall.

MCPL Story Time

MCPL Needle Felting

Adults can learn how to needle felt using raw and dyed wool during a week-long craft event at the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch, 221 Caroline St. Stop in any time the branch is open until April 15 to participate. Free, with all supplies provided. For more info, call 715-257-7292.

Aluminum can drive

The Athens public schools athletic department has an aluminum can collection available for people to donate their cans year round at the River County Coop, located at 900 Pine St. in Athens.

Services for this collection program will be handled by Dale and Tracy Westfall. Proceeds will support athletes’ achievements in public school athletics.

Lions Club meetings

Athens area residents are welcome to attend the Athens Lions Club’s monthly meetings, which are held at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, alternating between Balz Inn and Landmark Bar.

Anyone with questions can call Athens Lions Club member Steve Sondelski at 715-2181496. New members and guests are always welcome at the monthly meetings.

Medical equipment

The Edgar American Legion in Edgar has good, used medical equipment that can be loaned out. If you are in need, call Sylvia Fergot at 715-352-2221.

Edgar free breakfast

Edgar School District has announced it will participate in a new Universal Free Breakfast Program. All students qualify and there is no application for the family to complete.

While breakfasts will be free, lunches will not. Low income families are encouraged to apply for the Free or Reduced Meal Program offered through USDA.

M arathon T-Ball Registration

T-Ball registration forms are now available throughout Marathon City for any youth between 4 years old to kindergarten age wanting to play T-Ball this June. Practices run on each Monday and Wednesday starting on June 5, 6-7:30 p.m., at Marathon Area Elementary School. Friday nights are game nights starting on June 8 at 5:45 p.m. at the Veterans Park on 4th Street.

Registration forms are due by April 15, with no late registrations being accepted. The forms are available at the following places: Marathon Area Elementary and St. Mary’s school offices, Marathon City Post Office, Keith Paul Insurance, Edward Jones, Marathon Family Dentistry, Weiks Pub and Grill and People State Bank.

Knoll Fitness Center

The Knoll Fitness Center, which is attached to Stratford High School, is open from 4:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Monday thru Sunday, but the fitness center is closed from 12:30-1:30 p.m. each weekday for cleaning; it’s not closed an hour on Saturdays and Sundays for cleaning.

Stratford School District residents need to visit the high school office to get their keyfob updated before being able to gain access into the Knoll Fitness Center.

Marathon

C ounty Wisconsin Waters program

The Marathon County Historical Society’s April program will be presented by Scott Spoolman, author of “Wisconsin Waters: The Ancient History of Lakes, Rivers and Waterfalls.” The event will be on Saturday, April 15, at 2 p.m. at the Woodson History Center, 410 McIndoe St., Wausau. It will also be available digitally on Facebook and YouTube.

Spoolman will explore Wisconsin’s many waterways and how they came to be. He will sample a few of the 19 stories and several photographs from his book. For more information, call 715-842-5750 or visit marathoncountyhistory. org

History Chats

This month, the Marathon County Historical Society’s History Chats returns to a favorite theme, “People You Should Know.” These are the stories of people whose names may or may not be familiar, but are interesting and worth learning about nonetheless.

History Chats programs are at 12:30 p.m., every Thursday, livestreamed on YouTube and Facebook Live. They are also available to view afterwards as recorded programs on the society’s YouTube channel, Facebook page and on Wausau’s public access channel 980.

April 13 - Anna Opdahl Ben Clark looks at the history of the Opdahls, one of the most notable, early Norwegian families in Marathon County—from the family business running Wausau’s Scandinavia House to the music compositions of the Opdahl daughters.

April 20 - Herman Marth Gary Gisselman tells the story of Herman Marth, the (in)famous Socialist Chef of Wausau.

April 27 - Carl Lemke Ben Clark takes a look at the story of the Lemke Studio in Wausau, and the kind of studio photography done by Carl and his family.

MCPL Grab & Go Adult Craft

During April, adults can pick up a free Grab & Go craft kit from any of the nine Marathon County Public Library locations. The kit will contain supplies for making a needlepoint butterfly magnet. Free and available while supplies last. For more info, call 715-261-7230.

MCPL Story Contest

Teens and tweens can submit short stories to the Marathon County Public Library’s 2-Sentence Story Contest. Stories can be submitted until April 29 in two different age categories – 8-12 years old and 13-18 years old. Stories cannot be more than two sentences long.
