Abbygail Oertel has been awarded Stratford Student of the Month for December.

A term to describe her is fearless. A fearless person is brave and courageous with an ambition to conquer any obstacle placed in their path. They have a willingness to take risks and take the path less traveled.

A nominator said this about her: “The December Student of the Month is one of those exceptional students who leads by example. She exemplifi es the skills and characteristics that are so important in this world: leadership, determination, work ethic and kindness. If something needs to be done for students or staff, there is a willingness to step forward without the expectation of reward.”

Another nominator said this about her: “I have always had respect for the December Student of the Month. She has been willing to be a trendsetter opening doors for other young women to follow. She was unfettered taking classes that are often male dominated because she made her dreams and goals reality.”

Abbygail Oertel partakes in the following school activities and groups: Edgar Steam Show volunteer, High Honor roll, fifth grade homework helper, three-sport athlete in volleyball, basketball and track; forensics, Student Council, four-year class officer, FCA leader and an Army Basic Training graduate

College notes

Several college students from Stratford earned high grade point averages while attending UW-Stevens Point during the fall semester in the 2020-21 academic year.

Stratford students obtaining highest honors in the fall semester at UW-Stevens Point are Katie Krueger, Dakota Singer and Cacey Stini.

Trenton Heckel of Stratford was awarded high honors in the fall semester at UW-Stevens Point.

Students earning honors in the fall semester at UW-Stevens Point are Dahlia Gross, Elijah Marg, Remington Mueller and Maggie Stangl.

The following four Stratford college students were awarded to the dean’s list at UW-River Falls for the fall semester in the 2021-22 academic year: Claire Bangart in dairy science, James Heeg in business administration, Courtney Kaiser in biology and Kylah Wenzel in psychology.

The following three Stratford college students were awarded to the dean’s list at UW-Eau Claire for the fall semester in the 2021-22 academic year: Jacob Drexler in the College of Business, Paul Huther in the College of Education & Human Sciences; Alexis Lappe, Devan Slominski and Saige Tichy in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Book Club

People are welcome to join the Stratford Branch Library throughout January for an ongoing, virtual book club discussion on the book titled, “The Great Alone” by author Kristin Hannah, via the website Goodreads.

Stratford-area residents can read the book and discuss it with others at their own pace. People can call 715-446-3537 to get more information on the January Book Club.

Grab & Go crafts

Younger children can get a symmetrical snowflake craft kit from any of the nine Marathon County Public Library (MPCL) locations from now until Friday, Jan. 29.

Each kit will contain cotton swabs, blue circles and instructions for making this artistic, seasonal craft.

Parents can call the branch libraries to schedule a time to pick up a kit, or visit the drive thru at MPCL in Wausau any time it’s open.

Reading challenge

Marathon County Public Library will offer a virtual Winter Reading Challenge for kids, tweens and teens from now until Sunday, Jan. 31.

The challenge will be conducted via the free Beanstack app. Participants can log the books they read, the number of minutes/hours and more. Can participants complete the challenge in time? They should participate and find out!
