POST 147 LEGION SOFTBALL - Medford awarded regional title; state tourney this weekend

After a July 23 rainout in the championship round of its regional tournament, Medford’s American Legion Post 147 softball team was granted a spot in the Division 1 state tournament, set for this weekend in Merrill.

Medford and Marshfield weren’t able to set a makeup date for the title round, where Marshfield would’ve needed to beat Medford twice to knock Post 147 out. Marshfield conceded the state spot.

Post 147 will start its play in the eightteam state tournament Friday at 2 p.m. when it takes on D.C. Everest. The winner advances to a 6 p.m. game against either Westby or Shawano. The loser will try to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament when it plays at 10 a.m. Saturday, also against Westby or Shawano. The Wisconsin American Legion softball program is in its third summer season. The Division 1 post-season tournament consisted of 13 teams playing in four different regionals. The top two teams in each regional advanced to state with the exception of the Medford regional, where Merrill automatically advanced as the state host.

Merrill will take on Wausau in first game Friday at 10 a.m., followed by Waupun and Sparta at noon. The Division 1 and 2 state tournaments will take place at the Merrill Area Recreational Complex. Championship games are set for Sunday afternoon.

Medford’s Post 147 squad includes Zayleah Leonhardt, Addison Brahmer and Ava Hartl, who were members of the Whittlesey Lions team that won the 2024 Division 1 state championship.
