POST 147 SOFTBALL - Medford’s Legion softball team starts with 11-4 win
POST 147 SOLFTBALL
Medford’s American Legion Post 147 senior softball team began its summer season on June 11 with a convincing 11-4 win over the host Post 10 Patriots of Wausau.
Rylee Hraby struck out nine in four innings of two-hit pitching and drove in four runs, while Finley Arndt was three for three and Addison Brahmer and Zayleah Leonhardt added two hits apiece in the win. Post 147 outhit the Patriots 12-4.
Arndt and Hraby hit back-to-back doubles for a quick first-inning run for Medford. A three-run second inning widened the lead. Jolie Steliga drew a bases-loaded walk and Arndt hit a two-run single.
The Patriots got one in the bottom half and it stayed 4-1 until the fifth when Post 147 put up another three-spot to go up 7-1. Steliga and Arndt singled ahead of Hraby’s two-run single. After Leonhardt singled, Laney Hraby drove in the third run of the inning with a base hit to center.
Wausau made its only real push in the bottom half, scoring three unearned runs against new pitcher Kailyn Haenel to get within 7-4.
But Post 147’s four-run sixth put it away. Steliga walked, Brahmer beat out an infield hit and Arndt walked to load the bases for Rylee Hraby, who grounded to first. Wausau tried to go home, but Steliga beat the throw. Leonhardt then hit a tworun double and Laney Hraby drove in a run with a groundout.
Haenel gave up just two hits in three innings, struck out two and walked three. Hraby did not walk a batter. The run against her was unearned as well.
Medford was at Tomahawk Tuesday and hosted Wittenberg-Birnamwood on Wednesday. The team is scheduled to play at Marathon on June 24 and host Marshfield at 7 p.m. on June 25.
