Marathon’s varsity golf team on Tuesday won its second straight WIAA Division 3 regional championship at Pine Valley Golf Course.

The final team results are nearly identical to last season. On Tuesday, Marathon scored a team low of 344 strokes compared to 364 for runners-up Newman Catholic. Last season, the Red Raiders tallied 343 strokes compared to 363 for the runners-up Cardinals.

Junior Chevy Cook was Marathon’s top golfer at Tuesday’s home regional. He tied for second place with senior Samuel Groeschl of Iola-Scandinavia with 83 strokes each. Weyauwega-Fremont junior Cole Hauser was the individual medalist with a low score of 79 strokes in 18 holes.

Marathon senior Blake Kraft and sophomore Abram Jacobson tied for fifth place at regionals with Marion junior Elijah Scheef and Manawa junior Tate Drummond with 85 strokes apiece. Red Raiders senior Myles Handrick placed 13th out of 49 golfers competing with 92 strokes.

The top four teams at the regional including Marathon, Newman Catholic, Weyauwega-Fremont and Marion advance to sectionals at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3, at Golden Sands golf course in Cecil. The top four individual golfers who placed at regionals and are not on the top four teams advance to sectionals.

Marathon took third place at sectionals last season to barely miss a trip to state. The top two teams and top three individuals golfers not on those teams will advance to state.

Raiders second in Marawood

Marathon’s golf squad took second place this season to Marawood Conference champion Prentice which has now won back-to-back conference titles. Handrick and Jacobson were awarded second team all-Marawood Conference this season.

Regular-season results

Marathon golfed 377 at Merrill Golf Club on May 9. Kraft golfed 377, Handrick 94, Jacobson 97, Jourdan 98 and junior Marcus Sleiter 99. Cook golfed a 97 on junior varsity.

The Red Raiders golfed 343 at Inshalla Golf Course in Tomahawk on May 14. Jacobson golfed an 83, Cook 84, Kraft and Handrick 88 and Jourdan 103. Junior Karsan Huebsch golfed 97 on junior varsity.

Marathon golfed 346 at Wausau Country Club on May 19. Cook golfed an 81, Handrick 85, Jourdan 89, Jacobson 91 and Kraft 95. Huebsch golfed 100 on junior varsity.
