Tigers complete sweep of Wildcats

Stratford’s varsity boys basketball used a big first half to upend Edgar, 65-47, on Tuesday at home. The Tigers jumped out to a 39-21 halftime lead against the Wildcats. Both teams scored an equal number of points, 26, in the second half.
The Tigers made 20 of 32 two-point shots for 62 percent but were only four of 15 on three pointers for 26 percent. Overall, Stratford made 24 of 47 shots for 51 percent shooting from the floor against Edgar.
Junior guard Riley Spindler led Stratford with 20 points. Senior point guard Drew Bruesewitz added 13 points and he paced the Tigers with five steals. Senior Jett Schoenherr scored 11 points and he led Stratford with six rebounds.
Stratford also beat Edgar, 52-40, on Dec. 20 in Edgar to sweep the regular-season series. Stratford remains one game behind Marawood South Conference leader Auburndale. The Tigers are eager to get a second shot at beating Auburndale this season when they play the Eagles on Monday, Feb. 24, at home.
The Tigers defeated the Colby Hornets, 68-50, on the road Friday. The Tigers were losing, 28-27, at halftime to a Hornets squad that is better than its record. Bruesewitz led Stratford with a game-high 19 points and six assists. Schoenherr added 12 points and junior guard Brooks Vanderhoof chipped in 10 points and four assists. Bruesewitz, Schoenherr and senior Kaden Foster paced the Tigers with six rebounds apiece.
Edgar lost to Cloverbelt East leader Owen-Withee, 57-46, on the road Friday. Senior Leyton Schuett led the Wildcats with 14 points while junior Maverick Butt added 11 and sophomore Carson Nowak had eight. Junior point guard Tucker Streit paced Edgar with five assists and five steals in the loss. Schuett and Nowak led the team with eight rebounds each while senior center Kason Ristow added six. Edgar currently has a 7-10 overall record this season after Tuesday’s loss to Stratford.
Stratford has a 15-2 overall record this season and is ranked No. 6 in this week’s wissports.net Division 4 coaches poll. Bonduel, which lost to Marathon in the sectional championship last season, is ranked No. 1 in Division 4 with an undefeated 24-0 record this season. Edgar, Marathon or Stratford would need to beat Bonduel in the sectional championship at Green Bay Southwest High School on Saturday, March 15, in order to advance to the state tournament this year.
Red Raiders beat Cards Marathon’s varsity boys basketball team defeated Newman Catholic, 68-40, at home on Tuesday. Individual player statistics were not available before the newspaper was printed. Marathon improves its record to 11-6 overall this season.
Bluejays drop road games
The Athens varsity boys basketball squad lost road games to Loyal, 53-37 on Friday and to Colby, 71-58, on Monday. Individual player statistics were not available before the newspaper was printed. Athens sees its overall record fall to 2-13 this season.
