Sox look to use Sunday’s momentum going forward

By Ginna Young

It was a busy weekend, for the Cadott Red Sox Baseball team, as they were on the road to two league foes.

June 15 vs. Osseo Merchants (L 0-2)

Going up against the Chippewa River Baseball League defending champions, in game one of the series, Cadott struggled to put offense on the board. Neither team scored until the third inning, when the Merchants had two runs cross the plate.

“The Sox were able to get a lot of baserunners, but we’re unable to get clutch hits to drive them in,” said manager Rick Danielson. “Gio Basile pitched a great game for Cadott, only allowing two hits, but still took the loss.”

Basile also struck out two batters in the 2-0 loss. Offensively, Logan Burzinski came away with 2 hits, while Carter Hesselman and Warren Bowe each had a hit.

June 15 vs. Osseo Merchants (L 0-6)

Game two didn’t see any offense coming from Cadott, either, as Osseo put four runs on the board in the first inning, scoring two more over the game to take the 6-0 win.

“Alex Byom pitched for Osseo and did a great job keeping us off balance,” said Danielson. “He is a former league MVP.”

Basile again was on the mound, but was knocked out before the end of the first inning, with 4 runs and a hit. Zac Merritt then took over, going five innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs, and striking out 3. Bennett Bowe then went an inning, giving up 2 hits.

Jack Kein ended the day with a hit, followed by Jonah Hanson and Burzynski, with a hit each.

June 16 vs. Jim Falls Sturgeons (W 11-4)

The next day, the Sox were at Jim Falls, to end the weekend.

“We had a ton of runners on base this weekend, both in Osseo and Jim Falls. “We weren’t able to get that clutch hit until the ninth inning of the Jim Falls game. Then, the flood gates opened.”

Zack Thiesse went a complete game, picking up his fifth win of the season, allowing 12 hits and 4 runs, and striking out 6. He leads the league in wins and innings pitched.

Meanwhile Chad Kron knocked in a big homerun to increase his batting average to .333, notching 3 hits. Hanson also had 3 hits, with Kein and W. Bowe adding 2. Luke Erickson, Ely Johnson, Burzynski, Hesselman and Merritt each chipped in with a hit.

The Sox now sit at 7-6 in league action. “Hopefully, we can keep that momentum going, heading into this week,” said Danielson.
