A double header was where the Cornell-Lake Holcombe softball program ended their regular season, hosting two East Lakeland Conference opponents.
May 14 vs. New Auburn conference (W 15-0)
The first team to face, was New Auburn, who proved no match for the Knights, who racked up 15 runs to claim the win in just four innings.
“We were able to take care of business vs. New Auburn in the first game,” said coach Andy Lorenzen.
Senior Brooke Anderson took the helm in the first game, going three innings, allowing just a single hit, while striking out 5. Junior Candice Spaeth then took the mound, pitching for an inning and only walking one batter.
Offensively, junior Bralee Shcroeder had 3 hits, followed by Anderson, with 2 hits. Notching a hit each, were seniors Grace Harycki and Allie Turany, junior Richelle Raether, sophomore Faith Heinzen and freshman Michelle Bulter.
May 14 vs. Northwood-Solon Springs conference (L 7-0)
The Knights then saw another team for the second game, facing Northwood-Solon Springs, who was undefeated in the league. Offense just wasn’t there for the Knights, while the defense struggled to hold back their opponents and the Evergreens took the victory, 7-0 “We were unable to make the plays and make adjustments at the plate vs. Northwood-Solon Springs,” said Lorenzen. “They are a good team, but we did not play up to our potential.”
Anderson was again on the mound, lasting seven innings, with 6 hits and 7 runs, and striking out 8 batters.
Coming up with the only offense on the day, were Anderson and Turany, who each had a hit.
Finishing the year second in the conference, at 11-3, the Knights’ overall record was at 12-7 to end the season.
They now play at No. 3 Colfax, as the No. 6 seed, in the first round of WIAA playoffs May 21, after a first-round bye.
