Knights win four out of six games over the week

By Ginna Young

With six games on the week’s schedule, the Cornell-Lake Holcombe softball program had to be running out of gas by the end of the last match-up, but still came away with four wins to their credit.

May 7 vs. Clear Lake conference (W 10-5)

The week started out at Clear Lake, in the first game of a double header, which was previously scheduled to be played on the Knights’ field.

Our girls were a little upset that we had to travel to Clear Lake, instead of playing them at home, due to the weather forecast,” said coach Andy Lorenzen. “So, we started out a little slow.”

The Knights put two runs on the board in the second inning, while Clear Lake added a run in that inning, as well, and another in the fourth and fifth. By the fifth inning, the Knights’ bats picked up, adding six runs to the scoreboard.

“Things picked up and we were able to score runs,” said Lorenzen.

They would go on to take the road win, 10-5.

Senior Brooke Anderson was on the mound for the Knights, going seven innings, and allowing 6 hits and 5 runs, while striking out 8.

Junior Richelle Raether and freshman Michelle Butler each had 2 hits in the game, with senior Grace Harycki chipping in with a hit.

May 7 vs. Clear Lake conference (W 10-0)

In the next game, it was Knights, all the way, as they added runs in each of four innings, for a 10-0 victory.

Anderson was again at the helm, giving up just 3 hits and striking out 2 batters.

Offensively, Raether came up with 2 hits, while Butler, senior Abby Seidlitz and sophomore Faith Heinzen each had a hit.

“Both games were not ideal, but we were able to get through the day,” said Lorenzen.

May 9 vs. Bruce conference (W 15-12)

It was a battle at home against Bruce, with the Raiders coming out on top in the first inning, scoring nine runs. The Knights answered that with three runs in their side of the inning, along with three more in the second.

Bruce added two more runs in the the third inning, but not to be outdone, the Knights came up with five runs. Neither team scored in the fourth, but the Raiders added a run in the fifth inning, to take a one-run lead.

The Knights refused to back down and put up three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth inning, to claim a 15-12 victory.

Anderson went over six innings, giving up 5 hits and 3 runs, with 12 strikeouts.

Butler notched 2 hits, while coming up with a hit each, were Raether, Anderson, seniors Teryn Close and Allie Turany, juniors Faith Blaisdell, Alyssa Bowe and Bralee Schroeder.

May 11 vs. Athens non-conference (L 14-1)

In a weekend tournament, the Knights saw their offense falter against Athens, while defense couldn’t hold back the onslaught and the game went to Athens, 141.

Anderson was on the mound, allowing 13 hits and 14 runs, but striking out 4.

On offense, Anderson and Raether each had 2 hits, with Schroeder and Butler adding a hit each.

May 11 vs. Spencer non-conference (L 12-2)

The Knights then took on Spencer, but again, the opposition was too much and the game went to Spencer, 12-2.

Anderson was again pitching, going six innings, with 10 hits and 12 runs, striking out 6.

Coming up with the only hit of the day, was Schroeder.

May 13 vs. Flambeau conference (W 14-2)

To finish out the six-game stretch, the Knights were on the road to Flambeau, where they dominated the Falcons, 14-2.

Once again, Anderson was on the mound, going six innings, with 4 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 9.

Adding a hit each, were Anderson, Harycki, Turany, Schroeder and Heinzen.
