Hornets break even in pair of double headers
By Ginna Young
Cadott’s boys baseball program split their four games over the week, finally finishing up a match that had to be called because of darkness.
May 9 vs. Stanley-Boyd conference (W 5-1)
In the first of two double headers in as many days, Cadott was on the road to Stanley-Boyd. The Orioles got on the board first, with a run in the opening inning, but by the third inning, the Hornets came storming back to put up three runs on the board and two more in the fifth.
Their defense held on and Cadott claimed a 5-1 win in game one.
Junior Warren Bowe was on the mound, going 6.2 innings, and allowing only 2 hits and a run, while striking out 15 batters. Senior Connor Roth finished it out for the Hornets, giving Bowe the win.
Offensively, Bowe notched 3 hits, followed by Roth, with 2, while senior Axel Tegels, sophomore Michael Wellner and freshman Isaac Wellner each came up with a hit.
May 9 vs. Stanley-Boyd conference (L 12-4)
In game two of the double header, scoring was absent early on, but by the third inning, the Orioles had three runs cross the plate. Cadott answered with a run of their own and two more in the fifth.
Stanley-Boyd came up with a run in the fifth, five in the sixth and three in the seventh inning, while holding the Hornets to just a run in the sixth. Cadott couldn’t catch up and the game went to the Orioles, 12-4.
Sophomore Aiden Rykal went five innings for the Hornets, giving up 8 runs and 3, followed by Tegels, who went an inning, with a run, and senior Braden Denzine, who allowed 3 hits and 3 runs.
Senior Easton Goodman, Tegels and Bowe all added 2 hits to Cadott’s offense, with senior Brandon Sikora chipping in with a hit.
May 10 vs. Bloomer conference (W 10-7)
Resuming a game that had to be postponed in the 10th inning, because of darkness, April 30, Cadott was at home against Bloomer, starting with a 6-6 score. The Hornets came out hot, determined to put the game away, scoring four runs.
While Bloomer did put up a run in the 10th, Roth finished it out on the mound, sealing a 10-7 victory.
Altogether, Bowe pitched five innings, giving up no hits and a run, with 13 strikeouts, while Roth went just over four innings, allowing a hit and 6 runs, and striking out 3.
On the offensive side, Roth had 5 hits, followed by Rykal, with 3, and Tegels and I. Wellner, who each added 2. Senior Nolan Nordrum and Bowe each had a hit.
May 10 vs. Bloomer conference (L 27-9)
It was a different story in game two of the double header, as the Blackhawks’ offense was alive and well. They scored 20 runs in just three innings, while the Hornets only could muster five runs in that time. It didn’t stop there, as Bloomer added seven more runs over the game.
Cadott rallied in the fifth inning, to put four runs on the board, but it wasn’t enough and Bloomer walked away with a 27-9 win.
Roth and I. Wellner both went an inning, giving up 4 hits each, and 5 and 6 runs, respectively. Tegels also was on the mound for an inning, allowing 6 hits and 9 runs, while striking out 2. Freshman Riley Winchell then went two innings, giving up 9 hits and 7 runs, but striking out 2 batters.
Tegels ended the day with 3 hits, while Goodman and Bowe each had 2. Rykal, M. Wellner, and freshmen Chapman Eslinger and Brock Folczyk all added a hit.
