GILMAN BASEBALL - Loyal shuts out Gilman in both ends of baseball doubleheader

GILMAN BASEBALL

Loyal outhit the Gilman baseball team just 14-9 over 10 innings of baseball Tuesday night, but the Pirates couldn’t turn any of those hits into runs and nine errors doomed them in game two of the Greyhounds’ doubleheader sweep.

In Loyal, the home team broke away from Gilman with a three-run third inning for a 5-0 win in the first five-inning contest. Playing as the visitors in game two, Loyal scored twice in each of the two innings then buried Gilman with a five-run fourth in an 11-0 win.

The Pirates fell to 1-2 in conference play and 2-3 overall, while Loyal bumped to 4-0, 5-1 and took a half-game lead over Columbus Catholic for first place in the very early Eastern Cloverbelt Conference standings.

Gilman had its chances in game one, leaving eight runners on base in five innings. Down 1-0 in the top of the third inning, Tony Syryczuk led off with a single and Joey Syryczuk added another. But a strikeout, groundout and pop-up got Loyal and its starting pitcher Rhett Lamovec out of the jam.

The Greyhounds pounced on that momentum in the bottom half. Colten Sandelier walked and Lamovec doubled to drive him in. Tryn Scheel’s single scored Lamovec and Scheel later scored on a base hit by Jonah Vircks.

Adam Draeger singled and Talyn Podolak walked with two outs in the top of the fourth but were stranded. Loyal’s Cain Toufar put the game away with a solo homer in the bottom half.

Tate Krizan and Dalton Wisocky walked for Gilman in the fifth but could not advance after that.

Dawson Grunseth got the start for Gilman and struck out five in three innings. He allowed seven hits, one walk and four earned runs. Dawson Robinson allowed a run and two hits while striking out one in the fourth. Joey Syryczuk had two of Gilman’s five hits.

Loyal had just five hits in game two, but Gilman’s errors, plus five walks allowed the Greyhounds to move runners across the base paths. The Greyhounds’ two firstinning runs were unearned. Walks loaded the bases to start the five-run fourth and Loyal gladly took advantage of that, turning that into the knockout inning.

Joey Syryczuk again went two for three at the plate. He also was the losing pitcher. In three innings, he allowed three hits and seven runs, four of which were earned. He walked four and struck out one. Beau Pockat covered the last two innings. All four runs he allowed were unearned. He struck out four and walked one.

Gilman will head to Spencer Friday to make up a game that was postponed this past Saturday, then it has two challenging matchups with Columbus Catholic. The first is in Marshfield Tuesday. The Dons will be in Gilman on May 2. The Pirates have their first meeting with Greenwood Friday. That will be on the Indians’ home field. A home game with the Indians this past Friday was postponed to May 10.
