Chiefs pick up win over Panthers, drop other two

By Ginna Young

It was a good week of games for the Cornell boys basketball squad, as they came up with a win over a conference foe.

Jan. 30 vs. Winter conference (L 94-38)

The Chiefs headed to Winter, to begin the week, with scoring not there for the visitors. Cornell went into halftime down by 38 to the Warriors and while the defense held the home team to 20 points less than in the first half, Winter still took the win, 94-38.

Senior Bentley Spangler led for Cornell, with 17 points, followed by senior Carter Harycki, with 9, and senior Jayden Joas-Shaw, with 6. Junior Torren Parker followed that with 4 points, while freshman Bryce DeJongh added 2.

Feb. 2 vs. Prairie Farm conference (W 58-54)

With a few days of rest behind them, the Chiefs saw Prairie Farm come to call, in what turned out to be a battle for the match. The score was deadlocked at 2828, at the break and Cornell fought for supremacy in the second, narrowly outscoring the Panthers, for a 58-54 win.

“ Good solid win tonight,” said coach Jon Hetke. “Fought our way back and never gave up, and finished with the victory tonight.”

Sophomore Carson Stipek came up with three longrange shots, finishing with 15 points, while Parker added 11 points to the mix. Shaw and junior Hunter Anders came next, each notching 10 points, followed by Spangler, with 6. DeJongh also got in on the scoring, with 4 points, and Harycki chipped in with 2.

“Played very well as a team,” said Hetke.

Feb. 5 vs. Clayton conference (L 46-25)

Coming off the weekend, Cornell then hosted Clayton, but the scoring dried up for the Chiefs, as they added just nine points to the scoreboard in the first half. Offense was much better for Cornell in the second part of the game, but because of Clayton’s early lead, the match went the way of the visitors, 46-25.

Anders led the way for Cornell, with 10 points, with Stipek right behind, with 9. Spangler followed with 3 points, while DeJongh added 2 and Parker shot a free throw.

The Chiefs are now 2-17 on the year, and sit at 1-11 in East Lakeland Conference action.
