The Falcons faced off against a pair of tough opponents as they took on the two top teams in the Marawood-North and South over the past week. Abbotsford could not pull off the upset against either, falling to both Marathon and Rib Lake.

Abbotsford took on one of the top teams in the area on Friday night, traveling to Marathon in search of an upset of the Red Raiders. The visiting Falcons were able to keep things close for much of the first half, but their offense ran out of steam as the contest continued its course. The high-powered Marathon squad outscored the Falcons 61-22 over the final 23 minutes and took home the 92-47 win.

The home team jumped out to an early double digit lead, scoring the first 10 points of the game. AJ Brodhagen got the Falcons on the board after Grayson Totzke found him down low following an offensive rebound and Abbotsford was able to keep themselves within striking distance over the next few minutes.

Down 25-12, JV Castillo knocked down a transition three, Irvin Aguilera followed with a pair of driving layups and Payton Schreiber hit two consecutive baskets from downtown to go on a 13-6 run and pull back within two possessions. The Red Raiders were able to knock down two free throws on their next time down the court, however, and the following three Falcon possessions ended in turnovers. Marathon turned the trio of steals into points, effectively silencing Abbotsford’s comeback attempt.

Schreiber led the team with 11 points after shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field. Brodhagen also finished in double digits, putting up 10 points and grabbing four rebounds. Totzke had seven points, three points, and three assists, Aguilera added six points and Castillo ended the game with five points. Blake Bargender put up four points, and Andrew Hirsch and Carlos Lara both had two points each,

with the latter bringing down four rebounds. Preston Bunkelman had the most boards for the Falcons, securing five over the course of the evening.

Falcons a 72-53 defeat.

Rib Lake’s ability to drive to the basket and score pushed them over the top in the conference matchup. The visitors scored 50 of their points in the paint and 16 offensive rebounds turned into 22 second chance points. Abbotsford was able to hit

two more three point shots than the Redmen, but were outrebounded 46-32 and only two of their 53 points came after the first missed shot of a possession.

A transition layup from Irvin Aguilera gave Abbotsford a 2-0 lead and a three from Grayson Totzke countered a basket from Rib Lake to put the Falcons up 5-3, but the Redmen scored the next 10 points to build a 13-5 advantage. Though Evan Reis briefly cut the deficit down to two possessions, his layup getting the Falcons back on the board, the six-point difference was the smallest the Rib Lake lead would get.

The Redmen outscored Abbotsford 13-4 over the middle portion of the half, going up 26-11 with 6:30 left in the period. Baskets from Aguilera, Payton Schreiber and AJ Brodhagen cut the Rib Lake lead down to just single digits, but they went scoreless over the final two minutes and found themselves down 34-19 at halftime.

A 12-0 run for the Redmen between the end of the first period and the beginning of the second gave the visitors a 21-point advantage. The Falcons’ offense started to pick up, allowing them to generally keep pace with the conference leaders, but Rib Lake still managed to slowly but surely build their lead out even more.

Down 30 points heading into the final minutes of the contest, Abbotsford scored the last 11 points of the game, getting offensive contributions from Jack Sheahan, Noah Schraufnagel, Blake Bargender and Miguel Bautista.

Aguilera’s 11 points led the team, as did his three assists. Brodhagen put up nine points, Bargender had eight points and two steals, and Preston Bunkelman made two three-point shots to end with six points. Schreiber had five points and six rebounds, Totzke finished with three points and six rebounds and Reis also had three points and two blocks. Schraufnagel ended the game with three points, Bautista and Koren Decker finished with two points and Sheahan had one point. JV Castillo co-led the team with six rebounds.

Abbotsford’s next game will be at home against Assumption on Friday, Feb. 9. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
