Marathon’s varsity wrestling squad defeated the Auburndale Eagles, 40-26, in the first match of the night at Thursday’s Stratford quad. The win kept Marathon unbeaten in the Marawood Conference until it lost to Stratford in the second match on Thursday.

The drew weight was 138 pounds and Marathon senior Dylan Dodson pinned Auburndale sophomore Coleman Becker. Red Raiders sophomore Tate Sonnentag lost a 20-5 technical fall to Eagles junior Colton Weiler at 144 pounds. Weiler was the WIAA Division 3 state individual runner- up at 138 pounds last season.

Marathon senior Derek Vesely pinned Auburndale junior Tanner Wargowsky at 150 pounds. Senior Jacob Smith lost a 10-6 decision to Eagles sophomore Wyatt Malden at 157 pounds. Sophomore Reed McCain won a 13-4 major decision against Auburndale senior Brett Thiel at 165 pounds. Sophomore Grant Salter won a 3-0 decision against freshman Carter Grassl at 175 pounds.

Red Raiders freshman Jace Ostrowski was pinned by Eagles junior Hayden Lobner at 190 pounds and junior Juan Gomez was pinned by Eagles senior Greg Drummond at 215 pounds.

Marathon sophomore Alex Poppe received a forfeit win at 285 pounds. Sophomore Blake Underwood pinned freshman Truxton Becker at 106 pounds. Both teams forfeited 113 pounds and sophomore Cale Quaintance won a 7-1 decision against junior Derek Godard at 120 pounds.

Auburndale sophomore Zade Grassel received a forfeit win at 126 pounds. Marathon sophomore Swayne Stencil pinned Auburndale sophomore Trevor Trowbridge at 132 pounds to end the match.

Raiders third in Merrill tourney

Marathon’s varsity wrestling team took third place at the Merrill Bluejay Challenge on Saturday.

Underwood, who has a 30-0 match record this season, placed first at 106 pounds; Quaintance, 29-5, placed fourth at 120 pounds; Stencil, 27-8, placed third at 132 pounds; Dodson, 6-1, placed third at 138 pounds; Sonnentag, 22-10, placed fifth at 144 pounds; Derek Vesely, 25-10, placed fourth at 150 pounds and Smith, 22-11, placed fourth at 157 pounds.

McCain, 20-9, placed fifth at 165 pounds in Merrill; Salber, 17-13, placed 10th at 165 pounds; freshman Mason Lawrence, 10-13, placed eighth at 175 pounds; Ostrowski, 16-14, placed sixth at 190 pounds; Gomez, 10-17, placed 16th at 215 pounds and Poppe, 16-14, placed 14th at 285 pounds.

Edgar loses to Auburndale

The Edgar varsity wrestling team fell to Auburndale, 60-21, in the second match during Thursday’s Stratford quad.

Weiler of Auburndale received a forfeit win at 144 pounds. Edgar junior Austin Schreiber was pinned by Wargowsky at 150 pounds; junior William Hackel was pinned by Malsin at 157 pounds and sophomore Preston Erickson was pinned by Thiel at 165 pounds.

Edgar junior Jase Apfelbeck pinned Grassl in 1:28 at 175 pounds and Wildcats sophomore Lucas Stahnke won a 9-2 decision against Lobner at 190 pounds.

Wildcats junior Dakota Ellenbecker was pinned by Drummond at 215 pounds. Edgar senior Harrison Graveen received a forfeit win at 285 pounds.Truxton Becker and Godard of Auburndale received a forfeit win at 106 and 113 pounds. Edgar freshman Isaiah Kraft received a forfeit victory at 120 pounds.

Wildcats sophomore Dominic Contreras was pinned by Grassel at 126 pounds, freshman Tyler Schmidt was pinned by Trowbridge at 132 pounds and senior Corey Schilling was pinned by Coleman Becker at 138 pounds to conclude the match.

Edgar’s varsity wrestling squad competed in Saturday’s Merrill Bluejay Challenge.

Kraft, with a 12-10 match record this season, placed seventh at 113 pounds; Contreras, 9-14, placed 15th at 132 pounds; Schmidt, 11-11, placed eighth at 132 pounds; Schilling, 7-14, placed 20th at 138 pounds; Schreiber, 10-13, placed 13th at 144 pounds; Hackel, 5-18, placed 13th at 157 pounds; Erickson, 12-12, placed 14th at 165 pounds; Stahnke, 7-2, placed 13th at 190 pounds; Ellenbecker, 15-9, placed sixth at 215 pounds; junior Corey Koeppl, 2-3, placed 11th at 285 pounds and Graveen, 22-5, placed fourth at 285 pounds.

Athens boys wrestling well

The three Athens varsity wrestlers who competed in Thursday’s Mosinee quad dominated their opponents from Mosinee, Suring/Gillett and Crivitz/Wausaukee. Freshman Garrett Frahm and sophomore Evan Passehl finished their night with 3-0 match records in their weight classes while sophomore Marshall Venice ended up with a 2-1 match record.

Athens wrestling competed in Saturday’s Merrill Bluejay Challenge. Frahm, with a 26-14 match record this season, placed ninth at 106 pounds; Venice, 1322, placed 12th at 113 pounds and Passehl, 25-15, placed sixth at 132 pounds.

RED RAIDERS WIN AGAINST THE EAGLES- Marathon sophomore Reed McCann almost has Auburndale

senior Brett Thiel pinned at the end of a period during their bout on Thursday at the Stratford quad. McCann ended up winning a 13-4 major decison against Thiel in the 165-pound weight class.
