Marathon’s varsity boys basketball team passed both tests it took by playing against tough opponents in last week’s Rick Majerus Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook (WBY) Shootout at Concordia University in Mequon.

The Red Raiders’ first test was against Division 3 squad Kettle Moraine Lutheran last Wednesday. This private school is located in the town of Jackson which is approximately 20 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Marathon easily passed this test with an 82-71 win. Senior forward Tyler Underwood scored a team high 27 points.

Senior center Grant Warren contributed 26 points, three blocks and 20 rebounds. Sophomore forward Drew Woelfel added 15 points and two steals. Senior guard Cooper Hoeksema collected six assists and a pair of steals in the victory.

Marathon then faced a much tougher test against Division 4 squad The Prairie School on Thursday to conclude the holiday tournament. This is a private school located in Wind Point which is in the Racine Metropolitan area. Marathon passed its final test with a 57-54 win against The Prairie School.

Warren led Marathon with 22 points, four assists, two blocks and 14 rebounds. Woelfel added 11 points and three steals. Underwood contributed nine points and three assists and Andrew Glenn had seven points.

Marathon head coach Adam Jacobson spoke about the great experience his team had playing for the first time in the Rick Majerus WBY Shootout. The holiday tournament is named in honor of the late Rick Majerus who grew up in Milwaukee and was a head coach at Marquette University.

“It was a wonderful experience for our players to compete in the WBY Shootout,” he said. “It was a great opportunity to compete against a couple very talented teams and also watch some very talented players and teams throughout the tournament. We were able to play against a couple of different styles of teams at the shootout that forced us to have to execute in a variety of ways. Hopefully we can learn a lot from this experience that will help us as we get into February and March.”
