WVCA ALL-STATE VOLLEYBALL
A strong junior season not only gave Gilman junior Abby Chaplinski a spot on the 2023 All-Eastern Cloverbelt Conference volleyball team, she was included on the list of players to earn Division 4 All-State honorable mention from the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association.
The WVCA announced its All-State awards on Wednesday, Nov. 15.
This marks the third straight year Gilman has had a player gain honorable mention. Gracie Tallier got it the previous two falls.
Chaplinski played a key role in leading Gilman to a 17-12 season that included the program’s first WIAA Division 4 regional championship since 2000.
As the Pirates’ setter, Chaplinski finished the season with 549 assists, pushing her career total to 1,634. She averaged 6.4 assists per set, including 6.2 per set in conference play, where the Pirates placed third at 4-3.
Chaplinski had 48 service aces during the season and served at a 93% success rate with just 25 errors in 358 attempts. She had 315 digs, averaging 3.7 per set in 86 sets played and had 16 total blocks at the net. She added 87 kills.
A total of 32 Division 4 players received honorable mention, including senior Courtney Sommer of Columbus Catholic, the Eastern Cloverbelt Conference’s Player of the Year, and Sommer’s teammate, senior Aaliyah Krenn.
The Marawood North was well-represented on the list of Division 4 awards. Junior Kali Heikkinen of sectional champion Prentice and senior Jazelle Hartwig of Athens are part of the 10-player All-State first team. Sophia Coker and Sy’Rih Hartwig of Athens and Lydia Harding and Leah Nehls of Prentice got honorable mention.
The rest of the Division 4 first team features seniors Brooklyn and Marah Gruen of Royall, senior Paige Guld and sophomore Camille Sobolewski of state runner-up Newman Catholic, junior Michelyn Hansen of Hillsboro, seniors Jaelyn Stowe and Kelsey Justman of state champion Wonewoc-Center and junior Jenna Vermillion of Fall River.
From the Great Northern Conference, Lakeland senior Meg Pfannerstill and Mosinee senior Tristan Wicklund, the co-Players of the Year, got honorable mention in Division 2.
