Because of their stellar conference record, the Cornell-Lake Holcombe softball squad played host as the No. 4 seed, to No. 5 seeded Boyceville May 23. The game started out well for the Knights, with five runs in the opening two innings, as opposed to Boyceville’s two runs.

However, except for an additional run in the fifth inning, the Knights saw their competitors belt in 21 more runs, to take a 23-6 victory, ending the Knights’ playoff run.

“We were unable to make the routine plays, and mental and physical errors snowballed on us, generating 12 errors for the game,” said Lorenzen. “It’s hard to be competitive, when we were playing for five to six outs, per inning.”

Junior Brooke Anderson was at the helm for the Knights, going all seven innings, and allowing 18 hits, 23 runs and a walk.

On the offensive side, Anderson added 2 hits, while junior Makya Hetherington and sophomore Bralee Schroeder all came up with a hit.

Since there are no seniors on the Knights’ roster, it’s a good bet the team will come back next season, better than ever and ready to play.

“I feel if we could have played with that team, if we played our best defense,” said Lorenzen. “However, it didn’t go that way and we didn’t put ourselves in a position to win.”
