Baumgartner, Weir on WBCA All-Star rosters for June 28-29 games

In selections that should surprise no basketball fans in this area, Medford’s Logan Baumgartner and Gilman’s Tatum Weir have been chosen to participate in the 2023 Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Games to be played June 28-29 at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

Baumgartner will make it three straight years Medford has been represented in the Division 2 boys game, following Peyton Kuhn and coaches Ryan Brown and Bob Komanec in 2021 and Joey Sullivan in 2022. Weir is Gilman’s first all-star since Grace Grunseth was chosen for the 2020 Division 5 girls game that unfortunately never happened due to Covid.

Baumgartner is listed as a member of the White team in the boys Division 2 game. He is the two-time Great Northern Conference Player of the Year and Medford’s all-time leading scorer. He is a 2023 first-team WBCA All-State selection for Division 2 and also earned high honorable mention for the recently-released Associated Press 2022-23 All-State team, which does not present its honors by division.

The White team will be coached by Jeff Brieske of Tomah, who will be assisted by Ben Rushlow of Tomah and Todd Fergot of La Crosse Central. Members of the team Medford fans would be familiar with include Nic Williams and Bennett Fried of La Crosse Central, Charlie Morning of Menomonie and Tyler Orr of Rice Lake. The Red team’s roster includes Will Fortier of Lakeland.

Weir is a two-time first-team All-Eastern Cloverbelt selection who received honorable mention All-State honors in Division 5 from the WBCA. She plans to continue her playing career at UW-Platteville. Weir surpassed both the 1,000-point and 1,000-rebound career milestones during the 2022-23 season.

She is part of the Division 5 North team that will be coached by Ryan Klein of Wisconsin Rapids Assumption. He’ll be assisted by Paul Jaglinski of Assumption and Tom McCarty of Edgar. Names on the roster local fans may recognize include Marnie Kahl of Prairie Farm, Marley Hughes of state champion McDonell Central and Reagan Borchardt of Edgar.

The girls All-Star games are scheduled for Wednesday, June 28 starting with the Division 5 game at 9 a.m. The boys games will be the following day with the Division 3 game slated for 3 p.m. The players will take part in the All-Star Banquets held the night before each game.

The games serve as major fundraisers for several organizations and participants are required to raise money in order to compete. Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (MACC Fund) has been the game’s primary beneficiary having received more than $3 million over the event’s 45-year history.
