Hornets see a bright spot with multiple events

It was a long week for the Cadott track program, as they competed in back-to-back-to-back meets on the road.
April 11 Eleva-Strum Invitational
First up on the week, was a meet at Eleva-Strum, where the Hornets faced off with 11 teams.
“We had a lot of very good efforts and we were able to get everyone in the meet,” said coach Pat Rothbauer.
The relay teams performed very well, with the boys 4x400-meter team placing first, as well as the girls 4x400 and 4x800-meter teams.
Taking first place for Cadott for the boys, was senior Peter Weir in the 1,600-meter run, with a time of 4:48.27, while freshman Gryphen Lindeman placed third in the 800-meter run (2:34.67), as did junior Wyatt Engel in the 110-meter hurdles (18.26). Junior Dylan Drehmel also was third in the high jump (5-04), with junior Easton Goodman right behind in fourth in that event (5-04).
Engel also placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (47.16), with freshman Saibyn Will ending in fifth in the 3,200-meter run (11:59.13). Will also was eighth in the 1,600 run (5:22.98), and junior Cole Malecki placed eighth in the discus throw (86-08), as well as junior Easton Goodman in the 100-meter dash (12.00).
“We are trying athletes in a number of different events, to get a feel for where people will fit best,” said Rothbauer.
On the girls side, junior Emma Kowalczyk took top honors in the triple jump (30-03), with junior Jaycee Stephens following close behind in second place (29-02.2), while freshman Iszy Sonnentag came in first in the 100-meter hurdles (16.79).
Stephens placed third in the 100 hurdles (17.00) and Kowalczyk was fourth (18.42). Sonnentag also placed second in the long jump (15-07), followed by sophomore Adrianna Goodman, in fourth (14-07.5) and junior Kendall Webster, in fifth (13-07). In the discus event, freshman Haley Mathison was third (80-01) and senior Lucy Lindeman came in fourth (79-08).
Mathison was second in the high jump (4-07), followed by sophomore Mia Weggen, in 10th (3-08). In the 800 run, freshman Josie Roth was fifth (3:02.76), with sophomore Lyla Weggen right behind in sixth (3:10.6) and sophomore Maria Cuahua was ninth in that event (3:14.54).
Sophomore Mckenna Steinke was sixth in the 3,200 run (15:51.84), while senior Lilly Spaeth placed sixth in the 400-meter dash (1:11.12). Lindeman notched seventh place in the shot put (27-04.5) and Mathison was eighth (27-04), with freshman Taylor Hager placing eighth in the 100-meter dash (14.32) and sophomore Cortney Weggen was eighth in the 1,600 run (7:05.54).
“The coaches are very happy with how the early season has gone so far,” said Rothbauer.
April 13 Gilman Invitational
A couple days later, Cadott headed to Gilman, where they fared well against the other schools. The 4x400 relay team of seniors Nick Fasbender and Cole Pfeiffer, G. Lindeman and E. Goodman, took first place (3:53.39), as did the 4x400 team of Stephens, Kowalczyk, Spaeth and Sonnentag (4:29.07).
Weir came in first in the 400 dash (52.44) and second in the 3,200 run (10:54.79), while Drehmel finished in fourth in the high jump (5-4), and Engel was sixth in the 110 hurdles (19.38) and seventh in the triple jump (33-9). In the 1,600 run, Will ended in seventh place (5:30.74) and 10th in the 300 hurdles (51.23).
Malecki finished with a pair of 10th place awards, one in the shot put event (33-9.5) and one in the discus throw (928).
For the girls, Kowalczyk came in first in the triple jump (31-5) and fifth in the 100 hurdles (18.22), while Sonnentagplaced first in that event (16.62) and Goodman was second in the long jump (15-7.5). C. Weggen was also second in the 3,200 run (15:33.51), as was L. Lindeman in the shot put (30-5.25), with Mathison right behind in third (29-2.5).
Roth ended in third for the 1,600 run (7:07.73), followed by M. Weggen in fifth (7:16.16) and Cuahua for eighth (7:46.84). Mathison placed fifth in the high jump (4-4), while L. Lindeman, M. Weggen and Steinke were fifth, sixth and seventh in the 800 run, respectively, with times of 2:59.39, 3:05.7 and 3:08.
In the pole vault, L. Weggen tied for seventh (5-0), with Larson coming in eighth (1:14.27) in the 400 dash and L. Weggen was ninth in that event (1:15.88).
“Our meet last night went very well,” said Rothbauer.
April 14 Cornell Invitational
Finally, with not even a day between to rest up, it was off to Cornell, to finish the week.
“Congrats to Cornell,” said Rothbauer. “That was the first meet that they hosted in a long while and I thought they did a very good job.”
Despite the draining schedule, the Hornets placed well, with Engel coming up with first place in the 110 hurdles (19.01) and Drehmel placing first in the high jump (5-10). Engel was also fifth in the triple jump (34-09), while senior Levi Lindsay ended in fourth in the 300 hurdles (51.55).
“This was our third meet of the week, so we tried very hard to not overload anyone,” said Rothbauer. “We were able to put some people in events that they don’t normally run, so it was fun watching people compete in new events.”
In the discus throw, Malecki was fourth (94-02), followed by junior Adam Evanson in sixth (83-06) and Lindsay in eighth (79-05). Malecki came in fifth in the shot put (3300), with sophomore Tucker Salzgeber finishing ninth in that event (30-04).
“Our field events have been a real bright spot for us so far this year, and the kids deserve a lot of credit for working hard in the very short time we have been able to get outside,” said Rothbauer.
Lindsay also placed high in the 400 dash (1:02.14), with freshman Ethan Kerschner in ninth (1:06.1) and sophomore Jimmy Carranza in 10th (1:08.09), while senior Jacob Rowe was eighth in the long jump (15-05).
Placing first for the girls, was Sonnentag, in the 400 dash (1:02.02) and the 200-meter dash (27.64). Meanwhile, Steinke was second in the 3,200 run (14:34.3) and Stephens placed second in the long jump (15-06), while M. Weggen was third in the high jump (4-08).
L. Lindeman came in second in the discus event (89-05), followed by Mathison in third (86-03). L. Lindeman also was second in the shot put (29-08) and junior Shannon Burlum placed 10th (22-02). M. Weggen came in fourth in the 400 dash (1:14.44), with L. Lindeman in fifth in the 200 dash (31.12), followed by junior Kendall Webster in fourth (14.77) and freshman Marley Mengel in sixth place (15.06).
Senior Haley Larson came in eighth in the 200 dash (31.76) and Mengel was ninth (32.68).
“I think our team is developing a better understanding of the level of competitiveness that the coaches are looking for,” said Rothbauer. “We always emphasize just doing your best and not worrying about beating other people.”
