Both Medford teams in pools with top seeds at state curling

MEDFORD CURLING

The Medford Raiders will complete their 2022-23 curling season this weekend by competing in the Wisconsin High School Curling Championships at the Wausau Curling Center.

The boys and girls teams are among 16-team fields in their respective tournaments. Friday’s play will feature girls draws at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and boys play at 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Round-robin play will wrap up Saturday with draws at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Pool champions will meet in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. and the championships are set for 4:30 p.m.

After a 10-7 regular season that included a 6-6 mark in the North Division, Medford’s boys team drew the eighth seed and will play in a four-team pool that includes top-seeded Portage I, ninth-seeded Pardeeville and 16th-seeded D.C. Everest II. Medford did not face any of those teams during the season. A planned trip to Portage in December was canceled due to poor weather in that part of the state that day.

Poynette and Medford’s divisional rivals Stevens Point, Wausau West and D.C. Everest I are seeds two through five.

Medford plays Pardeeville at 12:30 p.m. and D.C. Everest II at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and will face Portage I at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Medford’s girls (0-11) are the 16th seed and in a pool that includes top-seeded Poynette, eighth-seeded Pardeeville and ninth-seeded Marshfield. The Raiders fell to Marshfield 11-1 in their season opener and gave the Tigers a much better game in their last game, falling 13-6.

The Raiders play Poynette at 10 a.m. and Pardeeville at 4 p.m. on Friday and Marshfield at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Poynette is the defending girls state champion, while Wausau West is the defending boys champion.
