RIB LAKE BOYS BASKETBALL

The Rib Lake Redmen made 10 3-point shots Friday night, hit 18 of 22 free throws, had a 32-31 rebounding edge and only turned the basketball over eight times.

Yet, they still lost by 21. That shows just how hot the Newman Catholic Cardinals were in their 91-70 Marawood Conference crossover win on Rib Lake’s home floor.

Newman sank 17 of 33 3-point shots and shot a blistering 56.9% from the field while improving to 16-2 overall. Mason Prey was the leading sharp shooter, drilling 14 of 18 shots overall, including six of eight 3s, to score 34 points. Jackson Pfender sank all six of his 3s in the first eight minutes while scoring 24 points and Isaac Seidel was the one Cardinal out of their big three to “struggle” while hitting five of 11 3s and scoring 17 points.

“I don’t think it was like we weren’t guarding them either,” Rib Lake head coach Todd Henderson said.

The Redmen, playing without floor general Andrew Wudi who was out sick, tried to keep up behind a huge performance from freshman Talon Scheithauer, who scored a season-high 20 points, and senior Tanner Vlach, who added 17.

Pfender’s fifth and sixth 3s turned an 18-13 game into a 24-13 with 9:52 left in the first half. Michael Borchardt got a friendly bounce on a 3-point shot to make it 24-16 and Scheithauer sank a 3 to make it 28-19, but Prey countered with a 3, a baseline jumper and a rebound putback to open up a 35-19 Newman lead.

Rib Lake made a run before the half ended, getting a banked-in 3 from Jackson Blomberg and two more triples from Scheithauer to pull within 41-36 at about the three-minute mark. Seidel put an end to that momentum with two straight 3s and Pfender made two free throws with 22.6 seconds left to give Newman a 49-36 lead at the break.

Newman was 11 of 19 from 3-point range in the half and 18 of 31 from the field overall. Rib Lake made six of 18 3s to stay within range.

Vlach’s trey made it 51-39 in the opening minutes of the second half, but that’s where the Redmen lost contact as Newman went on a 15-3 surge to go up 66-42. Prey and Seidel hit 3 to push the lead to 75-46 before Vlach, Scheithauer and Vlach again sank 3s to pull Rib Lake within 20, but that was as close as Rib Lake got.

Blomberg scored 10 points for the Redmen and had six rebounds and four assists. Dominic Quednow had nine points, seven rebounds and two assists. Borchardt added eight points and five assists.

Dalen Gebauer and Brady Heiser scored two points each, as did Seth Borchardt, who give the Redmen 11 solid minutes late in the game. Scheithauer had six rebounds and two assists. Vlach had two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Rib Lake beat Gilman 75-41 on Monday to improve to 10-9 overall. The Redmen are 5-8 in Marawood Conference play.

Rib Lake hosts Crandon tonight, Thursday, in a non-conference game and then heads to Stratford Friday for its final Marawood crossover game. Both games tip at 7:15 p.m.
