Local archery clubs well-represented in recent area tournaments

Medford’s Kirsten Weix and Gilman’s Casey Grunseth were the top scorers at Saturday’s third annual Flambeau Falcon Archery Tournament.

Weix, a senior, shot a 291 out of a possible 300 to win the high school girls division as the day’s top overall archer. Grunseth, also a senior, won the high school boys and overall boys championships with his 290, a score that placed him one point ahead of Thorp’s Hunter Kodl and Medford’s Landen Viergutz in the high school and overall standings.

Gilman sent its full squad to the meet, while Medford had a small representation. The Pirates placed second out of three teams in the middle school division with a score of 2,670. Gilman fell between Cadott (2,917) and Rice Lake (2,649). Cadott outscored Gilman 3,369 to 2,987 in the high school division.

Gilman had two more individual champions. Seventh grader Reece Weir won the middle school girls division with a score of 284 and sixth grader Colton Lang was the middle school boys champion with his 283. Pirates Brycen Madlon (220), Jaylin Mallo (218) and Weston Baltzley (207) were third, fourth and fifth among elementary boys. Alison Krizan shot a 273 to rank 11th among high school girls and Jazmyn Robinson shot a 256 to place eighth among middle school girls.

Medford’s Kadence Weix (257) and Kella Gebert (256) were sixth and seventh among middle school girls. Brody Peche (253) was 12th among middle school boys. Kaedence Ecklund and Mattie Gebert both shot 263s to place 16th and 17th among high school girls.

Both programs will compete at Gilman’s annual home event, which is set for this Saturday and will include both bullseye and 3-D competitions.

Thorp shoots

Medford and Gilman were the top two high school teams in the 3-D portion of the fourth annual Thorp Cardinal Shootout on Jan. 28, while Medford’s middle school team won the middle school title with Gilman placing third.

The Raiders edged the Pirates 1,662-1,625 in the high school competition. Medford scored 1,463 points at the middle school level to get by Thorp (1,405) and Gilman (1,398). Medford II was fifth with 1,263 points.

Medford’s top 3-D scorers included Viergutz, who won the boys high school division with a score of 294 and Kirsten Weix, who won the girls high school competition with a 287. Jenna Wickersheim was second behind Weix at 281 and Mattie Gebert was seventh at 268. Collin Rausch was seventh in the boys division with a 269. Dylan Emmerich was second out of 15 elementary boys with a score of 218.

Brock Anderson was second out of 39 middle school boys with a 267, Jake Erl was fifth at 244, Wyatt Meyer was seventh at 240 and Peche was eighth at 237. Kella Gebert was fourth out of 38 girls with a 250.

Casey Grunseth was second behind Viergutz with a 284, while Dawson Grunseth ranked fourth among high school boys at 273. Tatum Weir was fifth with a 275 in the high school girls division and Lang was the middle school boys champion with a 272. Reece Weir was fifth in the middle school division for girls with a 249.

In the bullseye shoot, Medford (3,270) and Gilman (3,208) were second and third in the high school competition behind Cadott (3,391). Thorp won the middle school title with 2,989 points, ahead of Medford (2,913), Owen-Withee (2,818), Medford II (2,762) and Gilman (2,738).

Viergutz and Grunseth were the top bullseye archers of the day with 295s, while Lang was the middle school boys runner-up with a 284.

Gilman’s Dalton Wisocky was eighth among high school boys with a 284 and Rausch was ninth at 281. Weix led local high school girls with a sixth-place 283, Wickersheim was ninth at 281, Tatum Weir was 12th at 279. Anderson shot a 267 to place eighth out of 75 middle school boys, while Kella Gebert’s 260 put her ninth out of 67 middle school girls. Reece Weir was 12th with a 255 and Gilman’s Rayanna Romig was 14th at 253. Emmerich was second in the elementary boys competition with a 250. Jax Gosse of Medford was fifth at 239.

Auburndale

Also on Jan. 28, some of Medford’s archers competed at the Auburndale shoots.

Viergutz (291) and Weix (284) won the 3-D high school championships, while Ashton Behling was 10th among boys at 262, Tana Rappe was 10th among girls at 248 and Kiarah Behling was 12th at 135. Kadence Weix (233) and Kodi Rappe (189) were 15th and 25th among middle school girls.

Kirsten Weix won the high school girls bullseye shoot with a 286 and Viergutz was second in the boys shoot with a 290. Ashton Behling was 10th at 268.

Cora Semrau placed seventh out of 47 middle school girls with a 262 and Kadence Weix was 10th at 258.
