Auburndale impresses in easy win

RIB LAKE GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Rib Lake girls basketball team ran into a bigger, more physical and more experienced Auburndale squad Friday that couldn’t miss at times and used its advantages to bury the Lady Redmen 8128 in a Marawood Conference crossover.

The Eagles shot a sizzling 53.4% from the field (31 of 48), including an amazing 14 of 18 in the second half to easily hand the Redmen their 10th straight loss. They were six of 13 from 3-point range and were 13 of 15 from the free throw line in their impressive offensive outing.

Rib Lake did hold leads of 2-0 and 4-3 following early baskets by Josie Scheithauer and Addison Gumz, but a 9-0 run that included seven points from senior Ashlyn Grimm quickly made it 13-4 and sent Auburndale on its way. The Eagles’ lead hit 20 at 30-10 and got as high as 27 in the opening half at 44-17 before Gumz nailed a 3-point shot with 17 seconds left to make it 44-20 at the break.

Scheithauer scored eight of her teamhigh 10 points in the first half for the Lady Redmen, including a basket off a steal that made it 14-8 early and a coastto- coast drive following a defensive rebound that made it 26-10. Gumz scored all seven of her points in the half, including a bucket that came off a Kamryn Annala steal that made it 35-14. Annala scored all five of her points in the half, including a 3-pointer that answered five straight points by Auburndale’s Annamarie Aue and made it 40-17.

Rib Lake went just two of 17 from the field in the second half, while going with several young players for the last 10 minutes, nine of which featured a running clock. Madilyn Blomberg had three points in the half, as did Emma Tlusty.

Scheithauer was Rib Lake’s rebounding leader with seven. Gumz had two assists and Scheithauer had two steals. Rib Lake shot 24.4% from the field (11 of 45) and was outrebounded 43-18.

Grimm poured in 32 points for the Eagles, who improved to 6-3 in Marawood Conference games and are currently 10-5 overall. Aue had 19 points and seven rebounds.

The Redmen have another major challenge tonight, Thursday, at Athens, who has just one loss and is battling Phillips for the Marawood North title. Rib Lake is back at home Friday, hosting Columbus Catholic in a non-conference battle at 7:15 p.m. Rib Lake goes to Flambeau Monday for another non-conference matchup before hosting Newman Catholic on Feb. 2.
