Person places 5th at Cadott; team earns split in double-dual

The Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe wrestling co-op came away with a win over Bruce in a tiebreaker and a loss to host Turtle Lake-Clayton Tuesday in the first of its three Lakeland Conference multi-team dual meets scheduled for this month.
With its full four-man crew back on the mat, the Wolfpack tied Bruce 18-18, but was credited with the team win by tiebreaking criteria. It went down to letter J on the list of tiebreakers with Cornell- Gilman-Lake Holcombe getting five points for near falls to Bruce’s three.
At 160 pounds, Braeden Person dominated Bruce’s Andrew Fredrick, building a 9-0 lead before getting the pin at the 3:09 mark. Troy Duellman, back after resting a shoulder injury for a couple of weeks, got a forfeit at 152 pounds and Anthony Schofield took a forfeit at 220. Harold Garcia of Bruce pinned the Wolfpack’s Preston Fredrickson in 3:35 in the 138-pound match and the Wolfpack forfeited to Shelby Garcia at 106 pounds and Ronan Garcia at 113 pounds.
With a nearly full lineup of 12 wrestlers, Turtle Lake-Clayton easily outscored the Wolfpack 54-18. However, the Wolfpack won three of the four contested matches.
Duellman got the opening takedown in the first period against Brandon Wright in the 160-pound match and added another takedown in the second period that he turned into a pin just before the period ended at 3:59. Person turned a first-period takedown into a pin at 1:10 in his 152-pound win over Mathew Muench. Fredrickson got the first takedown and a pin in 37 seconds while beating Marcus Zacharias at 132 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Schofield was pinned by Turtle Lake-Clayton’s Parker Lyttle in 2:31 in the 220-pound bout.
The home team received forfeits at 285, 106, 113, 120, 126, 138, 145 and 182 pounds.
The Wolfpack is headed to the Ladysmith Invitational Saturday and is scheduled to visit Flambeau for a Lakeland Conference dual on Jan. 19.
Cadott Invite
Person went 3-1 to claim fifth place in the 152-pound weight class for the Cornell- Gilman-Lake Holcombe wrestling co-op during Saturday’s 18-team Cadott Invitational.
Fredrickson was seventh at 132 pounds and Schofield was 10th at 220 pounds.
Those three combined to score 79 team points, good for 17th place, well ahead of 18th-place Flambeau (29) and just one point behind 16th-place Prescott. Bruce was 14th with 83.5 points.
Menomonie won the tournament with 562 points, while Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/ Melrose-Mindoro (485), Glenwood City (475), Cadott (421) and Regis-Altoona (374) rounded out the top five.
Person started his day with a pin in 1:20 over Regis-Altoona’s Mason Tomesh, but for the second straight tournament, he got bumped by James Bruhn of Phillips (16-7), who took a 9-2 decision in Saturday’s quarterfinal match. Bruhn went on to take third in the bracket, which was won by Cadott senior Tristan Drier.
Person bounced back with a 3-1 win over Glenwood City’s Andrew Blaser and defeated Menomonie’s Walker Ferguson 6-1 in the fifth-place match. Person avenged a loss he suffered to Ferguson in the Wolfpack’s previous tournament, the Northern Badger Classic in River Falls Dec. 29-30.
Fredrickson went 2-2 for the day and pinned Scott Johnson of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/Melrose-Mindoro in 2:29 in the seventh-place match. He started with a pin in 58 seconds over Whitehall’s Daniel Rubio-Cruz, but was pinned in 36 seconds by eventual finalist Jackson Blaken of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/ Melrose-Mindoro and in 4:42 by eventual fifth-place finisher Noah Christianson of Hayward-Northwood.
Fredrickson is 7-9 so far on the year. Schofield (7-9) went 1-2 in his bracket. He was pinned in 2:27 by Conner Gross of Glenwood City in his opening match. Gross went on to place fifth. After a consolation bye, Schofield pinned Thorp’s Sullivan Poehler in 4:55 and then was pinned in the ninth-place match in 1:50 by Cole Abraham of Phillips.
