MEDFORD CURLING

Three high-scoring ends propelled Medford’s boys curling team to its fourth straight win on Tuesday, an 8-6 victory over visiting Wausau East.

With the win, Medford avenged an 11-4 loss to the Lumberjacks on Dec. 2, which also happens to be the last time the Raiders team of Brett Lundy, Alex Wilson and Nathan Willman lost a match.

Tuesday’s match at the Medford Curling Club lasted just six ends as the teams agreed to not start any more ends after 5:30 p.m. due to the icy weather.

Wausau East started the game by scoring three rocks in the opening end, but the Raiders were able to match that in the second end. After East scored one in the third to take a 4-3 lead, Lundy capped the fourth end with a couple of perfect shots that knocked East rocks out of the house and allowed Medford to score two. In the fifth, Willman and Wilson got three scoring rocks into the front of the house and Wilson and Lundy guarded them up to extend the lead to 8-4, which was enough to survive East’s two-rock sixth end.

With the win, Medford improved to 4-2 for the season, all in North Division play.

Medford’s girls team of Caidyn Zenner, Erica Brandner and Adalyn Dittrich is still searching for its first win after falling to East Tuesday 8-4. Their game turned with East’s four-rock third end that reversed Medford’s 2-0 lead through two ends. The Lumberjacks got one more in the fifth, Medford countered with two in the fifth to pull within 5-4, but Wausau East put it away by scoring three in the sixth.

Medford is 0-5 for the year, all in North play.

The Raiders will head to Wausau this weekend for the two-day Tietge Bonspiel.
