Wrestlers battle in tournaments

The Edgar and Marathon varsity wrestling teams competed last week at the Northern Badger Wrestling Classic at River Falls High School.

Marathon freshman Blake Underwood was the tournament’s individual champion in the 106-pound weight class to help the Red Raiders team to a 10th place finish among 47 schools competing.

Blake Underwood is currently undefeated with a 19-0 match record this season. He was ranked third in the 106-pound weight class in Division 3 on December 21, 2022, by Wisconsin Grappler.

Senior Logan Werner was Marathon’s next highest finisher by taking fourth at 285 pounds. Sophomore Levi Krautkramer took sixth place at 120 pounds, freshman Cale Quaintance was ninth at 113, junior Dylan Dodson sixth at 132, senior Hector Pintor 11th at 160, freshman Tate Sonnentag 12th at 126 and junior Derek Vesely 12th at 138.

Marathon will compete with Edgar and Crandon at the Athens quad this Thursday, Jan. 5, which begins at 6 p.m.

During its home quad, Athens will unveil the memorial Jerry Wagner plaque to hang on the gym wall. Kraig Underwood, Marathon head coach, wrestled for Wagner in high school and he is Athens’ only fourtime individual state wrestling champion.

It is also Athens parents/ youth/senior night at the home quad. Athens freshman Evin Passehl took 12th place at last week’s Oshkosh Lourdes On The Water Wrestling Classic.

Edgar junior Harrison Graveen took 10th place at 220 pounds and sophomore Jase Apfelbeck was 12th at 170 in last week’s Northern Badger Wrestling Classic.

Stratford senior Jackson Ormond placed second at 195 pounds at last week’s Bi-State Classic in La Crosse. Tigers freshman Colin Cournoyer took eighth place at 113 pounds and sophomore Carter Lueck was 11th at 182.

Ormond was ranked second in the 195-pound weight class in Division 3 on December 21, 2022, by Wisconsin Grappler.

The Tigers have a home quad this Thursday, Jan. 5, at 6 p.m. against Auburndale, Chequamegon and Philips. It is also Stratford parent’s night.
