RIB LAKE GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Rib Lake girls basketball team has gone through a rough stretch in recent weeks, but the team did hit a brighter spot Tuesday, giving Abbotsford a competitive battle before falling 55-34.

The Lady Redmen trailed by just eight at halftime at 27-19, but the Falcons put the game away by outscoring Rib Lake 28-15 in the second half and improved to 4-2 in Marawood Conference play and 7-2 overall.

Statistically, the big difference was shooting. While Rib Lake forced Abbotsford into 15 turnovers and limited the Falcons to 35% shooting from the field (20 of 57 overall), Rib Lake hit just 18.4% of its shots from the field, including seven of 42 from two-point range.

Rib Lake had an advantage behind the 3-point arc, making two of seven, while the Falcons missed all eight of their attempts.

Rib Lake made 14 of 27 free throws, while Abbotsford was 15 of 25. The Falcons also held a key 50-36 edge in rebounding.

Rib Lake got six pints from Avery Niemi and Madison Grzanna, five from Josie Scheithauer and four apiece from Jennifer Pichea and Addison Gumz. Kamryn Annala had four points and 10 rebounds. Isabelle Gumz added two free throws and Kiana Dallmann hit one.

Niemi had six rebounds, Grzanna and Pichea grabbed five boards each.

Sydney Falteisek had a huge night for Abbotsford, scoring 25 points and adding 15 rebounds and four assists. Sommer Brodhagen added 16 points and nine rebounds.

Rib Lake is scheduled to host Pittsville tonight, Thursday, in non-conference play at 7:15 p.m., weather permitting.

The Redmen will resume Marawood North play on Jan. 3 when they host Prentice.

O-W 62, Rib Lake 24

On Friday, Rib Lake got blitzed early and was unable to shoot its way back into the game in a 62-24 non-conference loss at Owen-Withee.

The Blackhawks jumped out to a 28-2 lead with much of the damage coming from points off turnovers. Rib Lake struggled in the first half to navigate through Owen-Withee’s 2-2-1 full-court pressure and didn’t have much success in half-court sets either when the Blackhawks settled into a 3-2 look.

Owen-Withee scored 20 points off 18 Rib Lake turnovers in the half and led 34-7 at the break. The Redmen got their first bucket of the game from Scheithauer on a successful press break. Addison Gumz finally broke the big early run with a 3 and Dallmann got a shot to fall as well to make it 28-7 before Owen-Withee closed the half with six straight points.

Kendall Weiler scored 11 of her 13 points and Geneva Capetillo scored nine of her 13 to do most of the damage in the half.

Rib Lake had a better defensive second half, relying on their man-to-man for the most part and some full-court pressure. The Redmen scored nine of their 17 second-half points following Owen-Withee turnovers, reduced their turnovers to seven in the half and increased their field goal percentage by 10%.

Scheithauer, Gumz and Annala scored five points apiece to lead Rib Lake. Annala hit a second-half 3-pointer. Tahlia Scheithauer, Niemi, Dallman and Isabelle Gumz had a bucket each and Madison Grzanna added a late free throw.

Pichea led Rib Lake with six rebounds. Grzanna had five and Emma Tlusty, Dallmann, Josie Scheithauer and Addison Gumz had three apiece. Josie Scheithauer and Addison Gumz had two steals each. Eighteen of Rib Lake’s 31 rebounds came on the offensive end.
