Boys cut down Evergreens for first win

MEDFORD CURLING

The Medford boys curling team got into the win column for the season at home on Tuesday against D.C. Everest.

The boys won 10-3 with the D.C. Everest team calling it after seven ends. The boys, still playing three-handed under skip Brett Lundy stole the first end getting a rock in score while D.C. Everest had hammer.

In the second end, D.C. Everest scored two points. Medford answered back with three points of their own in the third end to take the lead, and command of the game.

The boys added two more to their score in the fourth end bringing it to 6-2. The Everest skip went out with a leg muscle injury in the fifth end with a sub coming in at the lead position and the other players advancing in positions. The new blood put up a challenge, but guards thrown by Nathan Willman and Alex Wilson did their job and kept the Evergreens to a gain of just one point in the fifth end. This proved to be the last time D.C. Everest scored in the afternoon with Medford stealing a point in the sixth end to make the score 7-3. Medford stole another three points in the seventh end with the Everest team shaking hands with Medford getting the 10-3 win.

The win puts Medford boys 1-2 on the season. They had an 11-4 loss against Wausau East on Friday.

The Medford girls were also playing three-handed on Tuesday facing off against the D.C. Everest girls. The young Medford squad struggled to get on the score board before putting up a late rally in the sixth end and ultimately losing 9-4.

D.C. Everest scored one rock in the first end, picked up two more in the second and three more in the third to bring the score to 6-0. After those big ends by D.C. Everest, the Medford girls rallied kept D.C. Everest to scoring just one point each in the fourth and fifth ends. Medford got on the scoreboard with a big sixth end earning four points. It was not enough as Everest scored again in the seventh and eighth ends to bring the final score to 9-4.

Both the boys and girls teams head to Portage on Friday for the annual Battle of the Brooms competition.
