RIB LAKE VOLLEYBALL

The Rib Lake volleyball team got off to a good start in Tuesday’s Greenwood Quad but ran into two tough opponents after that and finished with a 1-2 record for the meet.

The Redmen controlled the host Indians pretty much from start to finish in a two-game sweep to start the tournament. Tessa Weik served them to a 5-1 lead in game one. Greenwood tied it at 5-5, but Rib Lake scored the next four points and didn’t trail again in set one. They extended a 12-10 lead to 19-12 and then finished off a 25-15 win behind aces from Coralee Glenzer and Weik and winning points at the net from Josie Scheithauer, Weik and Kamy Annala.

Rib Lake got out to an 8-1 lead in game two behind a serving spree from Camryn Glenzer that included three aces. Camryn Glenzer and Annala got in some good swings as well and Scheithauer served an ace and added a couple of kills as the lead grew to 23-8 before Greenwood made a late run to close the final gap to 25-17.

In round two, Rib Lake met up the Tri-County Penguins, who knocked off the Redmen 25-17, 25-14. The Penguins lost a close first-round match to Thorp 2-0 in what wound up being the meet’s championship match.

Thorp clinched the tournament title with an easy sweep of Greenwood in round two and a 25-16, 25-17 sweep of Rib Lake in round three.

“The girls hustled and played each set until the very last point,” Rib Lake head coach Heather Weik said.

Tahlia Scheithauer had 41 digs for the night from her libero position and Weik had 24 assists, 11 serving aces and 10 kills.

“Overall we are 6-6 now,” coach Weik said. “I’m proud of the progress we are making and look forward to some tough matches coming up at Edgar Thursday and the Merrill tournament on Saturday.”

The non-conference match at Edgar, tonight, Thursday, starts at 7 p.m. while Saturday’s play in Merrill gets underway at 9 a.m. The Redmen start Marawood North play Tuesday at Athens, who owns the state’s number-one ranking in Division 4 to start the season. The Redmen host Chequamegon on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.

Rib Lake 3, Spencer 1

Rib Lake enjoyed a successful home opener on Thursday, downing the Spencer Rockets 3-1 in non-conference play.

It was Rib Lake’s third win over Spencer in less than a week. This one was close until the Redmen finally wore the Rockets down in the fourth set.

“It was a fun home opener and so nice to have the crowd support,” Weik said.

Rib Lake outlasted Spencer in the first two sets 25-23 and 25-20. Spencer avoided the sweep with a 25-23 win in set three. Rib Lake closed things out in set four 2514.
