Team begins regional play this weekend

Marathon’s American Legion Post 469 summer baseball team boasts an impressive 22-3 record heading into this weekend’s Class A regional tournament at Tyler Kahle Memorial Field in Tomahawk.

Post 469 begins Class A regional play at 11:30 a.m. this Friday, July 22, against Niagara. Edgar American Legion Post 393’s baseball squad starts the regional tournament with a 9 a.m. game on Friday against Crandon. Host Tomahawk plays at 2 p.m. against Wittenberg on Friday. It is a double elimination regional tournament in which the top team remaining advances to the Legion Class A state tournament on July 29-31 in Viroqua.

The loser of game number one between Edgar and Crandon would play against the loser of game number 2 between Marathon and Niagara at 4:30 p.m. this Friday in the Class A regional in Tomahawk. The winner between Edgar and Crandon would play against the loser between Tomahawk and Wittenberg at 7 p.m. this Friday.

This Saturday, July 23, the winner between Marathon and Niagara would play at 10 a.m. against the winner between Tomahawk and Wittenberg during Class A regional play in Tomahawk. The regional tournament lasts until this Sunday, July 24.

Marathon Post 469 got off to a blazing 20-1 start this summer; its only blemish during this torrid start was a road defeat to Abbotsford in the twin bill, a doubleheader, on the seasonopening day June 9. Post 469 dominated Rib Lake, 10-1 and 5-3, in a doubleheader on June 20, to extend its winning streak to four games. Grant Warren was the winning pitcher in the 10-1 victory. Jaden Koeller led the team in batting by going two for three with a pair of RBIs. Tyler Underwood earned the pitching win in Post 469’s 5-3 victory. Reed Mc-Cain doubled.

Marathon also swept a doubleheader against Medford Junior Legion, 7-5 and 10-2, on June 24. Blake Underwood was the winning pitcher in the 7-5 victory. Warren batted two for two with a pair of doubles and McCain doubled and also had two RBIs. Tyler Underwood hit two for two with a double and Cody Radtke was two for three at the plate. Drew Woelfel earned the pitching win in the 10-2 victory. Blake Underwood hit two for three with three RBIs and Evan DeBroux was two for three at the plate.

Post 469 downed Stevens Point Junior Legion, 8-2 and 6-3, on June 24. Tyler Underwood earned the pitching win in the 8-2 victory. Pierson Hamann led the team with three RBIs and Hector Pintor added two. Derek Vesely batted two for three at the plate. Pintor was the winning pitcher in the 6-3 victory. Braxton Jourdan led the squad with two RBIs and Tyler Underwood doubled. Marathon also swept a doubleheader against Edgar, 11-1 and 3-0, on June 27, to extend its winning streak to eight games. Jaden Koeller was the winning pitcher in the 11-1 victory. Daniel LaQua led the team by batting three for three with a double and two RBIs. Tyler Underwood doubled and also had three RBIs. Jorey Kunkel batted two for three at the plate. Grant Warren earned the pitching win in the 3-0 victory. Hamann doubled.

Post 469 downed Merrill Junior Legion, 10-0 and 5-3, on July 1. Tyler Underwood was the winning pitcher in the 10-0 victory. Grant Warrren and LaQua each batted two for three with a pair of RBIs. Blake Underwood earned the pitching win in the 5-3 victory. Hoeksema led the squad in batting by going three for three with a triple and three RBIs.

Twelve-game win streak

Marathon beat Stratford, 12-2, on July 7. Koeller was the winning pitcher. Hamann led the team in hitting by going two for three with three RBIs and Hoeksema added a pair of RBIs. Post 469 defeated RSW Junior Legion, 11-3, on July 8 to win its 12th game in a row. Grant Warren earned the pitching victory and he led the team in hitting by going three for four with five RBIs. Hoeksema and Koeller added two RBIs apiece.

Win streak snapped

Post 469 was edged by RSW Junior Legion, 3-2, in the twin bill of the July 8 doubleheader to halt its 12-game winning streak. Radtke suffered the pitching loss. McCain batted two for two at the plate.

Marathon returned to its usual winning ways by sweeping a doubleheader against Rib Lake, 7-0 and 9-2, on July 14. Tyler Underwood struck out seven hitters to earn the pitching win in the 7-0 victory. Koeller batted two for four with a pair of RBIs. Radtke doubled and Pintor tripled. Pintor was the winning pitcher in the 9-2 victory. Pintor also led the team at the plate by going two for three with a pair of doubles and four RBIs.

Post 469 split its final regular-season doubleheader of the season against Rib Lake, 6-2 and 3-4, on Monday. Grant Warren was the winning pitcher in the 6-2 victory. Hoeksema hit two for three with a double. Radtke was the losing pitcher in the second game.
