Medford, Interwald and Whittlesey get first wins


DAIRYLAND BASEBALL
The Dairyland League began its 2022 baseball season with one game on Mother’s Day weekend and three this past weekend.
_ In Division A, the Medford Moondogs opened their season Saturday night with a 6-1 win over Spirit.
Mike Delzer doubled and tripled while reaching base four times for Medford. Juan Colorado, Brent Mueller, Brett Paul and Brayden Boie combined to hold Spirit to just two hits.
Trent Woebbeking and Delzer hit back-to-back doubles as part of a two-run first that included an RBI groundout by Brett Paul. After Caden Goodwin’s RBI single got Spirit within 2-1 in the second the Moondogs got an RBI single from Michael Quednow in the bottom half. Delzer hit a leadoff triple to deep center in the third and scored on Boie’s double. Medford scored two in the sixth on a wild pitch and Woebbeking’s sacrifice fly.
Medford won’t resume league play until a May 28 night game against visiting Minocqua.
The loss was the second of the season for the Twins. They were blasted 32-7 by visiting Interwald on May 8.
Spirit hosts the Rib Lake Osprey Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Interwald does not play this weekend.
_ In Division B, the Whittlesey Reds won a good one Saturday, shutting out the visiting Marshfield Chaparrals 2-0 behind an RBI groundout by Brandon Loertscher in the first and a run-scoring single by Cade Alexander in the sixth. The Reds and Chaps figure to be the teams to beat in the division this season.
Whittlesey is scheduled to play two league games on Sunday, first visiting the Westboro Trojans for a 12:30 p.m. start and then hosting the Pittsville River Bandits at 4:30 p.m.
Westboro fell 5-2 at Tomahawk Saturday. The Trojans got off to a quick start, scoring twice in the top of the first but they were shut out after that. With the bases loaded, Dustin Freeman scored on a two-out wild pitch and Connor Westfall’s single scored Butch Wiegel, who had walked.
Westboro’s May 8 game at Marshfield was postponed to June 22.
